fear of death runs very deep in the primitive levels of the mind. most people can't come to grips with the idea that they'll just cease to exist, like the picture on the screen when you turn off the TV. so, over and over again, people have imagined "life after death". the earliest versions imagine it to be pretty much like life as we know it - people eat, use tools, wear jewelry, even have servants and pets (all buried with them in prehistoric tombs). i'm not entirely sure how that evolved into the concept of "rewarded by going to heaven or punished by going to hell", but the medieval Christians sure had fun with the details of that.
