In Sunnydale they called it “game face”.

Favourite clothes. Hoodies and T-shirts emblazoned with skulls, wolves, “Killswitch Engage”. Baggy jeans for ease of movement, adorned with wallet chains and studded belts. Much-loved karate suits, covered by a dark jacket so that the white won’t stand out so much, with black obi for psychological effect. Battered chest protectors and shin guards, veterans of martial arts tournaments. Leather jackets. Bandannas. Baseball caps. One young man fights in a full-face motorcycle helmet.

Favourite weapons. Named weapons. Excalibur. Anduril. Mr. Stabby. Reliable, faithful friends, caressed and cared for; bestowing courage and confidence upon their bearers.

Talismans. Gold and silver crosses on simple chains. Stars of David pinned to lapels. Small icons of the Virgin Mary. Single cloves of garlic in little pouches. A four-leafed clover. A belief that good will triumph.

Pre-fight rituals. Some spar. Some meditate. Some meet up and play violent video games. Some sit in the dark and listen to death metal.

A few pray.

Every night they gather in the new Council headquarters, waiting to be assigned their patrol: the Slayers eager and determined; the Watchers grim, memories of their dead parents driving them on. Each one armed. Each with his game face on. Warriors of Light. Evil’s Bane. Ready for anything.

And when Giles looks at them, he sees little children clutching teddy bears, desperately hoping that their beloved mascots will keep the nightmares away. And he wonders how many won’t come back tonight, and how many they’ll meet tomorrow night, sporting a different kind of game face.

And he knows why he doesn’t sleep any more.
