its not the price that crippes the economy its the spike, you have to do it very gradually to allow incomes to rise to accomodate it. if you do it too fast it may become expensive enough where people will be unable to drive to work and not everyone can carpool.
And in Britain, incomes aren't necessarily higher, they do pay more, in real dollars, for gas. But they're used to it, they have better public transit than we do, etc. I know not everyone can carpool -- I can't -- but we really have been fortunate, as far as gas prices, for years. In most other countries, people have been paying more in terms of percentage of income per mile driven, for a very long time.
Hopefully releasing some of the surplus will offer some small relief.
Overall for the long term, its time for this country to start putting more money and research into alternate forms of fuel or at the very least make hybrid technology an industry standard instead of a high priced specialty. (and personally ... I wouldn't mind if they stopped producing the Hummer -- theres just no need for a car like that)
Much as I hate the Hummer, there is a real use for it. However, that real use is for the real Hummer, not the tarted-up version that the idiots are buying to make up for certain deficiencies elsewhere. A real Hummer is useful for those areas where you almost need a tank but a tank would be too large. That's what it was designed to do, not hauling around the adipose carcass of some idiot with more money than brains.

theres no way we can create a mass transit infrastructure overnight.
we've found the perfect recipe to completely eliminate the middle class.
