A Mod-ly Note...

Jan 16, 2011 17:04

 Hi Everyone!

First off, we hope that all of our members have had a great January and that any of our members caught up in the massive wake of Mother Nature (be it snow storms in the US, floods in Brazil, floods, bush fires and torrential rains in Australia or even just the insane cold-snap that had the UK in it's grasp a while back), are safe and surrounded by loved ones.

Which brings me to our 'Mod Round-Up'.

A series of events have been added to our event calendar:
  • Posting for reel_torchwood fic has begun - it begun on the 15th of January.
  • Prompting for the new gen-fic community: tw_unpaired  has begun and is looking for members/participants and eventually betas. The mods were kind enough to email us here at the Archive with a full list of upcoming dates and details, so many, many thanks for that. It definitely makes our job a lot easier when it comes to keeping the calendar updated!
  • jack_ianto_las  is still accepting sign-ups. The closing date for that is the 31st of January.
  • Also helpbrazil2011 , fandom_flood_ap  and qldfloodauction are currently holding auctions of fic (and fan-art), in an attempt to raise funds for disaster relief in the wake of the extreme weather the world has been seeing, and I know fandom_flood_ap  is encouraging people to make offers of their beta services to help raise funds.

All of these dates can be found on our TW Beta Archives Calendar.

As a result of the poll that was posted in our very first Mod Round-Up, we would like to start the process of making the main archive available on the DreamWidth Mirror. Majority currently stands at being okay with the beta profiles linking to the profiles here on LJ, but to the one person who answer 'No', please feel free to email us as the poll was completely anonymous, and we will keep your profile off the DreamWidth Mirror, and we'll work something else out.

At this stage, we would like to remind everyone that, in order to appear on the Beta Archive List, we need you to comment on This Post so that the mods do not overlook you, and so we can place you under the correct category you'd like to be filed under.

We would also like to point out the new ' Available/Unavailable' post. If you need to toggle your beta availability at any stage - you're going on vacation, your professors have just told you you've got three days to write a 2.5k word essay -  simply post there with whatever your switching your status to: Available-Unavailable / Unavailable-Available, and the mods can adjust the main Archive List.

We would also like to ask that members - if they can - help in 'pimping' us to their friends who may have missed the original advertisements. You can find buttons and banners on the Buttons 'n Things page.

I think that about sums up the majority of the house-keeping, or at least the regular house-keeping.

The Mods have decided that we'd like to add a few... articles... to the group as well. A handy 'DIY Beta' article and an article on what writers can expect from a beta reader if using one for the first time, and what beta readers can expect from writers in the hopes to avoid things like miscommunication and general etiquette - such as 'How long is too long, when beta-ing a chapter?' and 'What happens if my beta misunderstood what I'm trying to get across?'. As such, in compiling these articles, we'd like to hear back from our members. What do you look for in a beta/writer? What do you think is something that every beta reader (and writer) should know before tackling a fic, especially if it is their first time?

Please leave a comment here (they will all be screened), or email us on twbeta(dot)archives(dot)mods(at)gmail(dot)com.

We really do thank you in helping to make this community a valuable resource for the Torchwood fandom as a whole.
