I use this program to help guide me with the shape of heads and placement of features a bit though:

It's really kind of terrible and uncanny valley- So I just use it as a rough guideline. Also I have spent time looking at how artists I admire draw their faces, and I try to incorporate some of their tricks into my own style. : )
