I've never liked "unisex" shirts - I'm curvy on top and have HIPS, so, well, straight up and down inevitably looks ugly on me. What I do is buy a men's large or xl and take it in to fit me.
This only works, of course, since I know how and have a sewing machine.
The thing with mens T-shirts is that they've all been desgned to look good in the store, nothing more. This is because it's assumed that anyone actually wearing one in public doesn't care about how he looks, and that he's more likely to buy it if the picture on it 'looks good' than anything else...
This, totally this. I wore Tshirts as a kid all the time - I'd get them WAY oversized (like XXX adult...) so that I would practically swim in them, and just wear them over my "real" clothes. Most of the Tshirts I got though were from events and stuff where that was always the "thing" - free tshirt for participating!
Nowadays I won't buy a "women's" tee because the way it is fitted assumes I am a skinny-ass bitch with no breasts - they might be tailored in a bit to reflect that a woman wearing one has curves, but they never come in large enough sizes. Women are all small people, didn't you know?
So the handful of Tshirts I have are a little loose and I only wear them on casual days. And I won't spend more than $5 on a Tshirt.
Don't write things like 'swim in them' in the same sentence as T-shirt... (Doesn't matter what else is in the sentence. ) I have a very active imagination... ;-)
In Soviet Russia, shirt wear you! Seriously tho, most men's/unisex style is based around the design of a sail wrapped around your mid section. Women's style has gone the opposite direction, with shirts so fitted they only fit a specific body type. I would absolutely LOVE if I could buy fitted men's t-shirts, but they simply don't exist. Ultimately it's a trade off no matter which route you go. And yes, unisex is a myth, unfortunately.
