Indian food in continental Europe is rubbish, because they have no ingredients to cook a proper masala and use powdered curry instead. I bet it's the same in Russia. In England the things are different, since there is such huge demand, so they have lots of wholesale suppliers for all these spices.

Same story for Chinese or Thai - if it's an isolated restaurant, then it's probably crappy.

American Indian food can be quite good, because the diaspora there is fairly big. I grew up near Oaktree Road in Edison, New Jersey, which is suburban New Jersey's answer to Brick Lane. There was a sizeable Indian grocery store there that even featured frozen TV dinners with things like Lamb Vindaloo.

I haven't had decent Thai food EVER outside of the US (of course, then again, I've never been to Asia, other than Turkey and Kazakhstan).

Sure, but you were talking about Russia. I doubt Indian there is any good, unlike sushi. Perhaps, that's the reason?

In Moscow it can be really good, but it's upscale dining. People would usually rather eat sushi. It suits the Russian palate, which loves zakuski and fish.
