My exact thoughts. Keeping ears warm AND most likely disguising some decent hearing protection to keep the baby's real parents from suing! Even if it's just blanks, they make a good boom. Though I recall that, in CoE at least, they went to 100% digital firing with faked recoil.

Though those muffs would probably not protect from anything more than a draft. Unless they're special TORCHWOOD earmuffs.
