Challenge 158

Jun 28, 2010 19:35

I think it's time for another vocabulary challenge! The New York Times has published a list of its 50 Most Frequently Looked Up Words, and there are some juicy lexical fruits on it. (And a couple that are there, I suspect, simply because they're less commonly used on New York's side of the Atlantic.) Your challenge for this week is to get some of those words out in circulation! Choose a word, or more than one, if you like, and use it in a Torchwood drabble or to inspire your drabble.

Fancy Words

The list (pdf) is here, and the article accompanying it is 50 Fancy Words. For convenience, I'll copy the first 25 words here, and you can see the list for the remainder.

inchoate | profligacy | sui generis | austerity | profligate | baldenfreude | opprobrium | apostates | solipsistic | obduracy | internecine | soporific | Kristallnacht | peripatetic | nascent | desultory | redoubtable | hubris | mirabile dictu | creches | apoplectic | overhaul | ersatz | obstreperous | jejune

Even if you become apoplectic or find it egregious that words you thought were quite ubiquitous appear on this list, you can respond with alacrity and overhaul our desultory familiarity with English vocabulary! (And I'm sure you can use the words much more skillfully than I just have...)

Be sure to tell us in your header which word or words you're using. Good luck and have fun!

Rules reminder:

- All stories must be 100 words long.
- Please place your story behind a cut; the comm's flist will love you!
- If requested, you must use the challenge word or phrase in your story; feel free to interpret that creatively.
- Please use the challenge tag “challenge: fancy words” plus any characters. The best way to tag is to put up your post and then click on the little tag icon at the top. This way you can pick from the mod approved tag list and keep things grouped better. Thanks for your help in this!
