The pain of loss: the Doctor, Rose, Estelle, others... Jack carried their faces with him always. Over the years he'd learned to dull his heartache with action - a thousand life-or-death encounters - blood pounding through his veins as he fought.
The same, human, blood that had sung in his ears - dragging him to the rooftop to stand shoulder to shoulder with the rest of the Christmas Damned. Furious: with his own helplessness; at his fear of missing his Doctor yet again and the prospect of another hundred years living his own particular lie; that he'd never find out *why*.
