You can mix up a paste of laundry powder and water, smear it on the bits of the oven you want to clean, leave it for an hour, and then come back and wipe off all the grime -- no fumes, no burning lye. Bio detergent works best for this, but any kind will do. It really works! I learned this trick from my housekeeper in Brazil.

Hmmmmmm that's a wonderful thing to know! would have to make a lot of it though to do the whole oven. Much better than wheezing over the fumes though, thanks! How does it work on the racks?

It works great. Just mix up a strong solution in a bucket and soak the racks for about an hour. The baked on gunk will simply fall off when you wipe it with a sponge.

I found that if you spray it on before you go to bed, it wipes off quite easily the next morning. :) Also, you can put the burner liners in the oven overnight.

And some of the cleaners have hardly any fumes. (Can't remember which, though, sorry).

I hate cleaning the oven. It's so hard on the back.
