The author of The Girl on the Train was on breakfast television the other day and talked about the lack of likeable characters and how it shouldn't make a difference when it's a good story. She was excited that Stephen King liked her book. :D

I would like to read it. Gone Girl didn't have any truly likeable characters but I still really like the book and felt it was so worth reading!

All My Children was the only soap opera I ever watched (other than the original Dark Shadows) and the main reason was Erica Kane. I used to watch it when ill, on holiday or unemployed (before there were video recorders) and it amused me how some things never changed and how Erica Kane's married names got longer and longer!

I agree, I don't have to like the characters to enjoy the book but the first few chapters before it really got going started to annoy me with every single one of them depressed and dislikeable but once it did get going it was ok. Gone Girl was similar in that the main two characters were not likeable and that was a good book as well. Her book Sharp Objects is also good (Gillian Flynn).
