We're thinking of going to Rome next spring so of course i'm already looking at hotels. We were going to stay three nights but maybe will stay a fourth and do a day trip to Pompeii. Graham has not been to Italy at all though i have and he really does fancy seeing Rome and the ruins. There's lots of choice for hotels at least so it's a matter of ( Read more... )

On the whole, I don't recommend being in easy walking distance of Termini, as the hotels round there can be a bit dodgy. We did like the Capo D'Africa, which is extremely well-placed for the Colosseum and Forum, and not that expensive, and good value.

Also, if you want to do Pompeii, I recommend an overnight stay somewhere in the Bay of Naples (NOT Naples itself - try somewhere on the Sorrento peninsula if you can) rather than a day trip. If you want to stay in Rome, then I suggest a day trip to Ostia instead - extremely interesting, and a lot less overrun by tourists, and you'd have tome to properly explore, which I don't think you would on a day trip to Pompeii.

Ooh i saw that hotel go by on one of my search lists. Will look into it, Thanks

Yes, i did a bit more looking into the Pompeii day trip and it's bloody well nearly 4 hours by bus just for a 2 hour tour. Will look into Ostia. Guess it will depend on how badly him indoors wants to see Pompeii. He does have a tendency to get motion sick on a bus so he might think twice when i tell him how long it will take to get there. Thanks for the suggestion!

Oh dear lord, if you're going to go at least go by train! (Trenitalia Termini-Napoli, Circumvesuviana Napoli-Pompeii Scavi.)
