Ugh

I came across a fic on tumblr and ff.net that has an almost identical summary to one of mine, basically the same plot and several chunks of nearly identical text. But it's just different enough that I dare not say anything. Ugh.

Really? OMG, I thought plagiarism was a thing of the past. If it's at the Library of Moria, let us know... you might not feel comfortable saying anything but we do. ;)

Heh, thanks. :) It's not though - my Elves are still on strike so I've been writing DC comics fic. It's so annoying though, it would actually be easier to deal with blatant plagiarism. >.<

Yeah... that sucks. People should know better.

I'd report the fic anyway especially if chunks of text are identical.

Nearly identical. They've changed little things, like who's speaking. SO annoying.

That makes me crazy. It has happened to me a couple of times - I recognize the summary, and then realize that entire paragraphs and scenes sound eerily familiar. Urrrrgh.

You can't really do anything about a similar plot, I guess, even if you know in your soul it was lifted straight from your story. :( Too hard to prove. But plagiarized text is something else entirely. I don't know anything about Tumblr, but I would probably complain at The Pit...er...at ff.net. Especially if you have an account there.

**hugs**

Exactly. I *know* it's come from my fic, but the changes mean I can't claim direct plagiarism. It baffles me though. If you're going to make the effort to change bits, why not write your own story?!

I'd complain on ff.net if the text is close enough. Not sure anything can be done about Tumblr. I'm so sorry love, it's happened to me and it is INFURIATING. I know imitation is meant to be the sincerest form of flattery but it sure as hell doesn't feel like it.

I am definitely NOT flattered. :/ I showed it to two people to be sure I wasn't over-reacting!

How upsetting! Have you looked at http://stop-plagiarism.livejournal.com/ although they don't seem to be active on LJ anymore, but you might be able to track the group down - they used to do stirling work investigating plagiarism - if YOURS is copied, chances are the author's copied other stuff as well?

I'll have a peek. It's tricky, since it's not 100% identical though. An example:

“No more.” The duster dropped from his hand as his voice echoed against the high walls of the cave. There would be no more Robins. The name was a curse. Even those who survived it suffered too much for it to be justified. Mine

“It’s a curse, isn’t it?” he said. “The name Robin. Every person who has ever held that title has ended up in tragic death and the only one who hasn’t has suffered too much for it to be justified.” Theirs

And there are a good dozen similar paragraphs. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but given that it's the same characters and plot, I'm twitching.

I reckon those are close enough especially if there are more than one similar paragraphs and the plot is the 'same' - I've seen the plagiarism group investigate on less than that - what they often do as well I think, is find other fics by the same author and google the phrases or synopsis and see if more than one result comes up? I still think it worth seeing if they are active in the forum they mention?

Yep, that's plagiarism.
