“Takashi, it’s 3AM.” Tuti’s groggy voice echoed a little in the empty apartment and he sighed, blinking at the light of his alarm clock through the darkness. “You realize that, right?”
Tuti laughed after a second at Takashi’s disapproving grunt on the other end of the line.
“Come on, I was just kidding. You know I love waking up to your calls,” he said, his voice carrying just a hint of sarcasm.
Tuti heard Takashi laugh, above the soft sounds of something being shuffled around.
“Yeah, sorry, I honestly didn’t look at the time,” Takashi said after a moment.
Another moment of silence passed, and finally Tuti laughed.
“What?” Takashi asked, sounding confused, and a little distracted.
“I’m just wondering why you called me, that’s all.”
Tuti was smiling though, as he tried to imagine what exactly his boyfriend was doing by the noises Takashi was making on the other end of the line. From the sounds of it, he… Well, Tuti really had no idea. And he was too tired to try to figure it out.
“Am I supposed to guess?” he offered after a second.
“I already told you, remember?” Takashi said quickly. “I’m on my way over.”
“What?” Tuti blinked. “Now? When did you tell me this?”
“When you picked up the phone, baka…” Takashi told him, seeming amused. “But now that I think about it, you didn’t sound very awake.”
Tuti laughed. “No, I don’t think I was. You really said that?”
“Yep,” Takashi said, and Tuti thought he could hear the apartment door closing in the background. “And don’t think I’m changing my mind now,” Takashi told him defensively. “I’m already on my way.”
Tuti listened to the small pout in Takashi’s voice, smiling a little. “And what if I tell you I won’t let you in?” he asked in a low voice, shifting around under the blankets, his smile widening.
“I’d tell you that you’re forgetting I have a key.”
Tuti laughed at this, realizing that he had no ready quip to return. “I think I’m too tired to keep up with you tonight.”
“Oh yeah…?” Takashi said softly, sounding a little amused. “You sure about that?”
“You want to try and change my mind?”
Takashi’s low laugh on the other end of the line caused Tuti’s breath to catch a little, and he found himself just a little more awake than he had been a second ago.
“I think I already have,” Takashi told him.
“Me too,” Tuti said, almost as an afterthought, his mind wandering from the conversation a little. He could hear the other man’s breath, a little hurried from walking, along with the wind as it rushed against the phone. These sounds seemed loud in contrast to the silent apartment, and Tuti suddenly realized how empty it seemed, this room, and the futon too, without Takashi here.
They hadn’t seen each other all day either, Tuti realized, with a twinge of disappointment.
“Where are you, anyway?” He asked after a second.
“Not far,” Takashi told him. “I’ll be able to walk faster if I hang up, but…”
“But what?”
“I don’t want you to fall asleep,” Takashi told him, and Tuti could hear the slight frown in his boyfriend’s voice.
He smiled a little. “I won’t fall asleep.”
“You will,” Takashi argued.
“I won’t!” Tuti laughed. “And if I do, you can wake me up, ok?”
Takashi made a small noise of agreement, seeming satisfied.
After another few seconds, Tuti clicked off his phone, and was left blinking into the darkness, wondering how long it had been since he’d been woken up at this time of the night by Takashi. Probably right around Takashi’s last day off, Tuti thought, smiling to himself.
He wondered for a second too, at how silly it was that he really hoped Takashi had meant it when he said he would hurry, before he forced himself to close his eyes, and wait.
