So I accompanied my grandmother to her driver's exam this morning. Let's just say it didn't go well. It was a 45 minute exam, but the examiner assumed control of the car 15 minutes in. Losing your licence is a difficult thing to go through as an elderly person - it means a whole loss of independence. I hope she is coping ok, though I know the streets are safer;) Incidentally, K is now working as an RA on a project that is trying to come up with a test that doctors can administer quickly to determine if a person is at risk to drive. His supervisor says the ability to be a competent driver is unrelated to age, but moreso to medical conditions and dementia, and that if you can assess this in the doctor's office, it would preempt ALL seniors getting the call to retake their road test at some predetermined, arbitrary age.
