Her laughter rippled through the cool breezy autumn wind as they strolled down the path back home. Leaves fluttered down from around them, announcing the departure of the long, searing summer. He smiled as he reached for her hand, but all he managed to grasp was the empty air.

It had happened again - the lapse of memory.

He sat down at the bench where they spent many sunny afternoons together and sadly looked at the empty spot beside him as a lone tear trickled its way down his cheek.

“Why did you have to leave so early? We agreed to leave…together”

A wave of nostalgia came over him, as he so desperately tried to cling onto their memories together - she had been there at every turning point in his life. He started off as a fanboy of her's, but they soon became good friends after meeting each other in the studio of MBC. They traded numbers, and soon they became close friends. He was the one who offered her a shoulder to cry on, helped her every time she struggled, and she the one to whom he always came when he needed a trusted friend to confide to. Their friendship had soon developed into something more.

His whole life was filled with her laughter, and the two years of complete solitude since her death were unbearable. He closed his eyes and tried to control the surge of emotions. As if to mock his weak willpower, the ghost of his dead wife appeared in front of him, with the same sly smile on her face that had always told him she was up to no good again.

“Geun Young…” he whispered simply. He smiled weakly, as he reached out to stroke her cheek gently like he always did, and her eyes softened at his gesture. Hazelnut. It was one of the nicknames, chosen from the endless store of pet names that had never stopped growing since he was seven, which he always called her, and although she hated it, there was a familiarity and warmth to using it. He took a strand of her soft, gray hair, and kissed it gently, holding it as if it was delicate china that would break at the slightest touch. Unexpectedly, the tips of her hair began to change, into a shade of ivory black, a color that he hadn’t seen for years. He stepped back in amazement as he saw her wrinkles iron out; the creases at the corners of her eyes smoothen and stretch. All at once, he was transported back to the day that he often relived in his nightly dreams.

“I missed you,” she whispered quietly. He noted the sadness in her eyes, and she looked down to her feet. He walked towards her slowly. The spring breeze brought the faint scent of blossoming flowers towards them, a light, sweet scent that he would never forget for the rest of his life.

“I told Hana that…it wouldn’t work out” It was the closest thing to the truth that he could admit. “It probably won’t work out with any other girl either” He saw her eyes widen in surprise.

“You can’t be…? But that means…” She stuttered over her words, not knowing which ones to choose. “You’re…attracted to guys?”

At first, the words didn’t register in his mind, but as it dawned on him what she meant, he laughed and ruffled her hair.

“No…I’m not gay,” he chuckled. “I just meant that there’s only one girl that owns my heart, and I think no one else can stop it from continuously flying to her”

As he stared into her piercing brown eyes, his feelings came pouring out, a flood of words that he had never planned to tell her. When he finally finished, the world around them started spinning, everything around him becoming blurred. After a while, she finally spoke.

“Jongwoon, this is so…unexpected. But,” she paused, thinking it over carefully, “since I realized that missing you so much was unusual, that being apart from you for more than two days tore my heart apart…”

He opened his eyes. Forty years ago, they took their vows, to stand by each other no matter what hardships they faced. How ironic it was that after all these years, after all the problems they faced together, he should be alone on this bench here instead of by her side. He sighed. Her last words to him still constantly echoed in his mind; especially on days like these where his mind played tricks on him.

Panic. As he walked up to the house, he somehow knew something went wrong. Each step he took weighed heavily on his mind, as he entered his house. Eerie silence.

“Geun Young?” Jongwoon shouted to the empty house. No response. Branches of honeysuckle, which she had arranged in vases on each windowsill, filled the whole house with a sweet aroma. It was that smell that he remembered the most vividly from that day; the day his whole world seemed to stop spinning at all.

He walked up the stairs as fast as a seventy-five year old could manage. Although he had been retired for years now, he still tried to keep his body fit, taking walks whenever possible. But as he climbed up the stairs to the second floor, he realized how long he was taking; how he could have reached the top already if it had been ten years ago…

“Geun Young!” He screamed at the curled figure on the floor. As he rushed towards his wife, he heard short, painful gasps for air. He turned her around so she was stretched out and stroked her hair comfortingly.

“Honey, hang on. I’ll go call the ambulance” He was about to get up and walk to the phone when her hand squeezed his.

“I…love you. Never…forget that”

Harsh reality hit. He had lost her. And his world turned dark.

Leaves in the quiescent park twirled in the twilight, as he slowly walked back home. Light played across the path and the sun slowly crept away, hiding behind the sleeping mountains in the distance; creating an array of colors in the vast, cloudless sky.

“Look! Isn’t it beautiful? The shades of purple, light blue…and that hint of yellow…” Geun Young's voice floated across the air. He smiled sadly as some children ran across his path, kicking a ball and filling the air with laughter.

A/N: Tried to do something different this time - would've made it Kyusung, but I wanted to change it up a bit :) I love how Yesung fanboys over Moon Geun Young, and how he's always said that she's his ideal type. Is it a happy ending? That's for you to decide. And I'm not actually sure how many people will read this since it's not Kyusung...
