I did awana for many years and as a teacher I agree with you about no real world application of the verses. What I do like is that I know many of the verses as an adult and use them for guidance and reaffirmation of my faith. "For ALL have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God" , etc. I also sound like I really know my bible and am smart when can recite a verse and location that relates to a conversation.

Awanas isn't developed into a full curriculum yet where what is going on relates to what the children must memorize. Instead every child is at different stages with different verses. I wish it was redeveloped into a more comprehensive system that involved combining the lessons from the teachers to what is being memorized. Wouldn't it be cool if the games played, the lessons taught by the teachers, and the verses memorized all related with a specific theme and lesson? That would be so awesome.

LOL about you sounding smart in conversation and yay for memorizing scripture. I feel however that the amount of scripture the little ones are asked to memorize is to much at least some of the sections are to much. Little guys should focus on shorter texts with lots of application. The older kids stuff is better like I said more application to thier lives. A developed curriculum would be nice. We have a theme each night like last week was canned food drive night and the lesson was about miracles involving food. I also a half hour of bible teaching is to much for the little guys. Have u ever looked at the stuff put out by Orange or Group those are my fave kids ministry curriculums

nope. I haven't. I remember as a kid questioning the purpose of just memorizing scriptures without real world application. I will have to check out Orange and Group
