Colours, lights, music, food. Everything was so vibrant that night. Kame could just imagine the aroma of onions that caramelized on the grill lingering into his nostrils. Ramen, Takoyaki, Yakisoba and even the slices of watermelon seemed so tantalizing. Kame felt like he could almost be blinded by the bright lights coming from all the stores and random performances. He could almost feel the bliss surrounding him.

Almost.

The annual summer festival was being held a mere three blocks away from their apartment. It was a festival full of joy and so much love and friendship. Yet, why was Kame watching it all being broadcasted from the television screen? What more, alone?

Jin… where are you?

Kame could see the young couples walking hand in hand so lovingly. He saw toddlers munching on candy filled with such sweetness, it could give you a bad toothache if you had one too many. Even an old couple with their hands clasped together caught his attention, sitting together in a corner on a bench, not uttering a word as they watched the starry sky together. Somehow, Kame felt jealous.

Why, you ask me, was Kame alone at home and not at the joyous festival with the man he loved? Simple. He was waiting for Jin to come home, hoping that they could watch the fireworks together later at midnight. It was something he had wanted to do on their first year anniversary. He was even counting down to the fireworks display.

Countdown: 1 hour.

Jin came home not long after that. He wore a sleek black suit, his shoes were shiny as usual, his briefcase in hand and he wore that same worn-out look he always had practically glued to his face. Before Kame could get up to even greet him, Jin had already retreated to his room. Kame couldn’t believe it. Jin had forgotten.

He forgot… our anniversary was today…

Countdown: 40 minutes.

Kame watched as everyone attending the summer festival pranced around in their beautiful Yukatas, hair skillfully groomed with their friends and families. He remembered those years, those youthful years. Everyone on screen was enjoying their moments together, awaiting the grand fireworks later on. Everyone but him. A sad smile curved on his oddly dry lips, his eyes distant as he held on to the TV remote in hand.

The first time Jin confessed to him was during their last year of high school together, under the fireworks. The first time Jin proposed to him was 2 years ago, under the fireworks.

Before he knew it, tears of disappointment had slowly escaped his beautiful eyes. Switching off the television, he lay back on the sofa weeping silently and within minutes, Kame fell asleep. All he had on his mind was watching the fireworks with Jin that night.

Countdown: 20 minutes

Kame was awakened abruptly by someone that night. His eyes were still heavy and his mind blank. He wondered who it was but knew instantly that it was Jin when he had grabbed his hand, dragging Kame to their balcony.

“Jin wha-” was all Kame could say as Jin silenced him with a finger to the lips.

He’s smiling. Why is he smiling?

“Jin tell me wha-”

“Shhhhh. Look there,” Jin whispered as hepointed towards the night sky.

Kame’s eyes widened and his frown was replaced with his usual radiant smile. He couldn’t believe it! The lonely night sky was now illuminated with vibrant colours. Fireworks. Streaks of stunning neon lights burst into the skies and disappeared after a brief moment, only to be replaced with even more streaks.

Jin cupped Kame’s cheeks with one hand and gave him a soft peck on the lips. His words couldn’t make Kame any happier than he already was.

“Happy first anniversary,” said Jin, as he looked lovingly into Kame’s teary eyes.
