“I am going to set this thing on fire,” I told Cassadee, huffing and throwing down the comb that was in my hand.

“I don’t think it’s good practice to set your client’s heads on fire, Jack,” she told me, chuckling as she cleaned up her work area, which was set up right next to mine.

“Good thing it’s a plastic fucking head,” I answered, holding my breath as I successfully pinned the curl the way I wanted. “Finally!”

“Looks hot,” Cassadee said, peeking over at it.

“Good,” I said, opening my drawer and putting my things into it. “I’m sick of messing with it.”

Cassadee laughed, sitting down in her chair and kicking her feet up.

“Fuck. My feet are, like, screaming,” she whined. “Hopefully Rian’s up for being a sweet boyfriend tonight. They feel worse than when I was nine months pregnant.”

“When is Rian not sweet to you?” I asked, rolling my eyes. “Oh! Did I tell you the big news?”

“I don’t believe you did,” she said, raising an eyebrow.

“May’s pregnant,” I told her, watching her face light up.

“Is she?! Awh! How far along?” she exclaimed and I made a face.

“I actually don’t know. She got kind of pissed and stormed off when we asked her who the dad was.”

“Do you think it’s Zack?” she asked and I shook my head.

“That would be literally impossible. He took off to New York over a year ago,” I told her.

“And she hasn’t seen him since?”

“No one has,” I said, shaking my head.

“That’s crazy.”

“I know. But I mean, it’s just weird. I haven’t seen her with anyone since. She hasn’t talked about anyone. I can’t even think of one person who could be the father.”

“Well if she got mad she obviously knows,” Cassadee pointed out and I nodded.

“I know. I’m just wondering why she’s so reluctant to tell me. We don’t have secrets. She was like the first person I told about Josie besides my mom. She knew before Alex did. We’ve always told each other everything. It’s just weird.”

“I’m sure it’s nothing personal. Maybe she just wants to talk to the dad first,” she said, “make sure he’s on board.”

“He better be on board. I’ll kicking his fucking ass,” I said, hearing her laugh.

“Who needs an ass kicking?” I heard a voice ask, glancing over to see our friend John walking in from the back room. “Are you and Alex fighting?”

“No,” I said, laughing.

“Good,” he said, nudging Cassadee to try to get her out of her chair. “Up and at ‘em, Cass. I want a haircut.”

“No! I’m off the clock! Go away,” she said, swatting at him. “And I’m not gonna be responsible for cutting any of your beautiful hair off.”

“Fine,” he said, rolling his eyes and plopping down into my chair.

He grabbed the electric clippers from their place, turning them on and moving towards his head.

“Give me those before you fuck up your own hair,” I huffed, grabbing the clippers from his hand and shutting them off.

I ran my fingers through his hair, playing with it and looking up at him in the mirror.

“What do you want?” I asked, raising an eyebrow.

“All off,” he answered and I rolled my eyes.

“No,” I replied, opening up the drawer and taking out my clippers and a spray bottle. “I’m just gonna trim your dead ends while you figure that out.”

“How can you be so impulsive?” Cassadee asked, shaking her head as she watched me snip the brown locks away.

“It’s just hair,” John said, shrugging. “It grows back.”

“It takes me like two minutes of inner conflict before I change anything about my hair,” Cass said and he laughed.

“Sometimes you just gotta roll with it,” he answered, glancing up into the mirror at me. “What about you, Jack? You have that impulse feel about you.”

“I got pregnant at seventeen,” I answered, chuckling. “You tell me.”

“So did I,” Cassadee interjected, “but that wasn’t impulse. That was a broken condom.”

“Mine was a lack of,” I answered, hearing John laugh. “And way too many jell-o shots.”

“You worry too much, Pope,” John told her, waving me off when I asked him what he wanted me to do about his hair.

“I’ll just do what I want then,” I responded, seeing him nod and smirk.

“What you need to do,” John said, spinning himself a little so he could look at her, “is do something spontaneous and crazy. Then you’ll see how nice it feels to shake it up a little bit. Take a walk on the wild side.”

“Like what?” she asked, cocking an eyebrow.

“Go home, put on some sexy little lacy shit, whatever the fuck you girls wear when you’re trying to get down with your man, and greet your hubby at the fucking door. He won’t be expecting it. You’ll both get lucky. Everybody wins,” he told her and she rolled her eyes.

“Yeah, that could work, despite the fact that we have a two-year-old daughter,” she said.

“I’ll watch Emily,” I told her, raising an eyebrow and she shook her head.

“I can’t ask you to watch my daughter just so I can go home and have sex with my boyfriend,” Cassadee said, shaking her head and I shrugged.

“I don’t care,” I told her. “She and Josie can play.”

“I just can’t ask you to do that.”

“You’re not asking, I’m offering,” I told her. “Seriously, Cass, it’s okay. Mommies and daddies need alone time too.”

“Okay,” she said finally and I smiled. “You’re sure Alex won’t mind?”

“Are you kidding me?” I asked, raising an eyebrow. “Alex doesn’t care. Plus, Josie’s gonna be happy that she has someone to play with, and Daddy is a sucker for his little princess.”

“Alright. What time do you want me to drop Emily off?”

“I’ll call you when after I get home from picking Josie up,” I told her, combing through John’s hair. “Which I would have done already if Diva hadn’t stormed through here demanding a haircut.”

“I wouldn’t done it myself, but, like you said, I would have fucked it up all up,” he answered, laughing.

“Just know you owe me a free haircut now too,” I told him and he grinned.

“I got you, bro,” he responded.

“Alright then, guys,” Cassadee said, standing up and downing the rest of her pop before tossing it in the trash. “I’m going to head out. I’ll call you later, Jack.”

“A’ight,” I told her, examining John’s hair to make sure it was even.

“Give your boyfriend big smooches for me!” John called out.

“John, I’m going to just pretend you don’t have homosexual fantasies about my boyfriend,” Cassadee told him and he laughed.

“It’s not my fault you bagged a fox, girl,” he told her and she shook her head.

“Because that’s not weird at all,” she said.

“At least he didn’t try to fuck your boyfriend at the Christmas party,” I said, glaring at John in the mirror.

“I’m sorry! You never introduced us! How was I supposed to know that was your Alex?”

“I figured the fact that his name was Alex and I had told you numerous stories about my boyfriend Alex would make it click in your thick head.”

“You know I’m not that smart,” he said and I laughed. “He handled it well, though.”

“Yeah, after I explained to him that you were just John and you try to touch everyone’s penis.”

“Did you tell him I tried to touch yours?”

“Um, no. You would probably be dead,” I told him, hearing him laugh.

“Hey, mama. I’m on my way to get Jo-Jo,” I said into the phone, turning out of the schools parking lot.

“Well don’t come here. Alex already stopped and picked her up,” she said and I raised an eyebrow.

“He did? He didn’t tell me?”

“Yes he did.”

“Okay. I guess I’ll just head home then,” I told her.

“Okay, baby. Be careful,” she answered. “I love you.”

“I love you too. I’ll call you later,” I told her, ending the call.

I turned down a road in the direction of my house, opening my phone back up and finding Alex’s number. I hit send, putting it up to my ear and listening to it ring.

“Hello,” I heard his voice answer sweetly, and I smirked.

“A call telling me I didn’t have to go to my mom’s would have been nice,” I answered, hearing rustling before he swore.

“Shit. Sorry, babe. I meant to call you but I got busy with Josie and dinner.”

“You made dinner?” I asked, raising an eyebrow.

“I did. Josie helped,” he answered and I smiled.

“Well I’m excited to eat it,” I told him, stopping at a red light. “Emily’s coming over tonight. John and I talked Cassadee into spontaneously sexing up Rian.”

“Oh really?” I heard Alex laugh. “That’s fine. Tell Cass not to worry about feeding her. We’ve got plenty.”

“I will. I’m gonna call her and let her know she can drop her off now.”

“Alright, babe.”

“I’ll see you in a few minutes.”

“I love you,” Alex told me, and I heard a commotion in the background.

“I love you too. Go make sure she’s not burning the house down.”

“Alright!” he said, and I laughed as I heard a click, signaling the end of the call.
