“Daddy, I thirsty,” Josie mumbled into my shirt and I nodded.

I broke away from her, getting off the couch and walking into the kitchen. I saw May and Jack standing near the stove, stopping in my tracks when I saw the tears welling in Jack’s eyes.

“What’s wrong, Jack?” I asked, eyebrows furrowing in concern as I stepped forward, wrapping my arms around him.

“Jack! Don’t! You’re gonna make me cry too!” May exclaimed, waving her hands in front of her face as her eyes watered.

“No! Why are you guys crying?” I asked, pulling her into the hug with my other arm. “Come on, guys, stop! You’re gonna make me cry and I don’t even know what’s going on!”

“I’m so happy!” Jack sobbed, wrapping his arms around May, confusing me even more.

“Okay, so these are happy tears?” I asked, stepping back and watching them embrace. “Why are we so happy, guys?”

“I’m gonna be an uncle!” Jack exclaimed and I looked at May, grinning.

“Wait, you’re pregnant?!” I asked, watching her nod in response. “That’s awesome!”

I grabbed her back into a hug, ultimately turning her and Jack’s hug into a group one.

“Congratulations,” I told her, pulling away and watching Jack cling to her.

“Why are you crying?” she asked him, running her fingers through his hair. “I thought I was supposed to be the emotional wreck.”

“I don’t know!” he said, shaking his head and she laughed.

“When did you find out?” I asked May as Jack pulled away from their hug.

“A few days ago. I just- I’m so nervous to tell mom,” she said and Jack laughed.

“If she was okay with me telling her I was pregnant at seventeen, you telling her you’re pregnant now will be a cakewalk,” Jack told her and May chuckled.

“I just don’t want her to be upset with me.”

“She was completely fine with us, so I think you have a pretty good shot, hon,” I told her with a smile.

“She’s gonna be so excited, May, I promise,” Jack told her with a grin. “And I’m super excited too!”

“Me too,” she said, putting her hands over her stomach. “I just can’t believe it, you know? It’s so weird.”

“Oh, I know, trust me,” Jack grinned.

She grinned back before turning and grabbing a water bottle out of the fridge. I then remembered what I had come in here for, grabbing one of Josie’s cups out of the cupboard. I poured some apple juice in it, putting the cap on and carrying it out to her.

“Here, baby,” I said, giving her the cup.

She took it, automatically beginning to drink out of it and I raised an eyebrow.

“What do you say, Jo?” I asked, seeing her eyes flicker up to me.

“Tank you, Daddy,” she said before looking back at the movie.

“You’re welcome, Princess,” I said, kissing the top of her head before going into the kitchen.

“If you have a girl we have tons of clothes we can give you,” I heard Jack saying to May.

“I’m sure Cassadee and Rian have some stuff you could have too,” I told her. “Emily won’t be needing them anymore.”

“That’s true. I’ll have to talk to Cass about it,” she said, and I nodded, sitting down in one of the chairs.

“Hey, May?”

“Yeah?” she asked, looking up at me curiously.

“Don’t take this the wrong way, because I mean it sincerely out of curiosity, but... who’s the father?” I asked, watching her look down at her hands. I glanced over at Jack, seeing him raise an eyebrow.

“You know who it is, right?” Jack asked, and she huffed.

“Of course I know who it is,” she snapped and I saw Jack roll his eyes.

“Well excuse me for being the least bit curious. I haven’t seen you with anyone else since Zack left,” he said and she glared.

“That doesn’t make me a whore!” she said, voice raising slightly as she stood up.

“Guys,” I said, glancing between them uncomfortably.

“I don’t want to discuss this with you right now!” May told him, walking over to the door. She slammed it shut before we could hear her stomping up the stairs to the upper part of the duplex.

“What was that?” Jack asked and I shook my head.

“Pregnancy hormones, I guess?” I said, shrugging and he huffed.

“You started that,” he told me and I raised an eyebrow.

“I did not!”

“You brought it up!”

“I was just wondering! I didn’t think she’d react all defensively.”

“I didn’t either,” he said, draining the spaghetti noodles. “I didn’t think she was over Zack.”

“I still don’t think she is,” I told him, leaning against the counter and crossing my arms, “but something obviously happened.”

“I’m still so excited,” Jack told me, turning around grabbing my hands before pulling me against him. “We’re gonna be uncles, Lex!”

“You’re gonna be an uncle,” I told him, kissing his knuckles. “I don’t know if I really fit into that category.”

“Alex, we’ve been together for seven years. I’m pretty sure you’re as close to being in the family as you can get.”

“Seven years? Holy shit,” I said, watching him nod.

“And counting, bitch,” he told me, kissing my lips gently.

He pulled back and I rested my forehead against his, fingers wrapping loosely over his hipbones.

“Baby?” he mumbled quietly, resting his hands over mine.

“Hmm?”

“I want another baby,” he told me and I cocked an eyebrow.

“Oh yeah?” I asked and he nodded.

“Don’t you?” he asked, bringing his head back and looking into my face. “It would be great. Josie would have a little brother or sister to play with. Our family would grow.”

“Of course I do, I just... I think we need to talk about this first,” I told him, seeing his face fall slightly. “I just don’t know if now’s the right time. I mean, we’re both still in school-”

“Nevermind,” Jack said, stirring the sauce before turning the burner off.

“Baby, I’m not saying no. I’m just saying not right now.”

“I get it,” he told me, pulling plates out from the cupboard and setting them on the counter. “Go tell the guys the food is ready.”

“Don’t be upset.”

“I’m not.”

I sighed, wrapping my arms around him and pulling his back to my chest.

“I love you.”

“I love you too.”

“Okay, break time!” Josh exclaimed, slamming his book shut and tossing it onto the coffee table in the middle of his living room.

“Stop stressing, Al,” Travis said and I sighed, shutting my own book and setting it on the floor.

“I’m trying not to. Everything’s just riding on this final, y’know?”

“Yeah, but then you get to start student teaching and hey! you’re done,” Travis told me and I nodded.

“I don’t know. I’m just nervous,” I said, sighing and running my fingers through my hair.

“Here,” Josh said, and I looked over to see him doing something on the table. “This’ll make you feel better.”

I sat up as he handed me something, taking the joint from between his fingers. I bit the inside of my cheek, looking down at it.

“Fuck it,” I muttered, taking the lighter out of his other hand and crossing my legs.

“Alex, are you sure that’s a good idea?” Travis asked, raising an eyebrow and I shrugged.

“It’ll be fine.”

“You and I both know Jack wo-”

“Trav, let me worry about Jack,” I told him, lighting the joint and setting the lighter on the arm of the couch. I took a hit, coughing as the crude smoke burned my throat.

“If you say so,” Travis said, shaking his head and flipping through his textbook.

“It’s fine. It’s just a couple hits,” I said, rolling my eyes and taking another hit, holding it in as I passed the joint to Josh’s waiting fingers.
