“You ready, baby boy?” I asked Alex, looking up at his pouting face.

“No, I’m not going,” he said and I rolled my eyes.

“Yes you are, come on” I told him, standing up and grabbing a hold of his hands.

“But I don’t wanna!” he insisted, trying to pull his hands away.

“I know, but you have to. Let’s go,” I said, hearing him huff as he finally stood up. “It’ll be okay, babe. You’ll feel so much better after you get your teeth out.”

“I’ll learn to live with the pain,” he pouted and I shook my head.

“No, ‘cause I’m tired of seeing you in pain. Plus impacted wisdom teeth can get infected and that’ll just make everything worse.”

“Yeah, I know,” he said, sighing.

“I know you’re scared about the surgery, but everything will be fine. You’ll just be a chipmunk for a few days and I’ll take good care of you,” I told him, smiling and turning around to press a kiss against his lips.

“Good,” he said, smiling softly.

“So is your mom picking you up, or do you want me to?” I asked him, grabbing my jacket.

“Mom can, I don’t care. You have Josie,” he said and I shrugged.

“Okay, come on, chipmunk” I said, shoving his coat at him as he whined.

***

“Hi, babes!” I squealed as I walked in the door, catching Josie’s attention and making her smile.

I picked her up, kissing her face and making her coo.

“Hi, Jack,” my mom said, walking in from the kitchen. “Where’s Alex?”

“He’s still at the dentist,” I told her, falling back on the couch and snuggling my giggling daughter.

“When do you have to go back and pick him up?” she asked and I shook my head.

“Isobel’s bringing him home,” I told her and she nodded.

“Oh, that’ll be nice then,” she said and I nodded, making a face at Josie and hearing her squeal.

“I’m just hoping he feels okay after the surgery. I don’t want him to be in pain or anything,” I told her.

“They’ll give him medication for the pain. I’m sure he’ll be fine in a few days,” she said and I nodded.

“I wonder how he’ll react to the medicine. I remember Rian was so out of it,” I said, laughing. “He cried when he got home because he couldn’t remember how he got there. Kathi said it was the funniest thing ever.”

“It might just make him really tired. That’s how Joe was.”

“I guess we’ll find out. Knowing Alex he’ll be a total psychopath,” I said, looking down at Josie. “Yeah, your daddy’s cwazy, huh?”

“Da!” she said, smiling happily and I grinned. I pulled her closer to me, squeezing her tight.

“Jack, your phone is ringing,” my mom yelled out, and I walked back into the living room, picking it up off the table and seeing it was Alex’s mom.

“Hello,” I answered, sitting on the couch.

“Jack,” Isobel’s voice responded. “Are you busy?”

“No. Is everything okay? How’s Alex?”

“That’s what I’m calling you about,” she said and I frowned.

“Is he okay?” I asked her.

“Oh, he’s fine. He just refuses to leave the dentist’s office until he finds you,” she answered and I laughed, shaking my head.

“Sounds like Alex,” I told her. “So you want me to come get him?”

“I feel like he’ll have a mental breakdown if you don’t,” she responded and I laughed again.

“Okay. I’ll see you in a few,” I told her.

“Okay,” she responded before we hung up.

“What’s going on?” my mom asked as I stood up to go put my shoes on.

“Like I predicted, Ale is reacting to the medicine like a weirdo, and he won’t leave until I come get him,” I told her, slipping my shoes on.

“Oh, okay,” she said, “I’ll keep an eye on Josie for you, then.”

“Thank you,” I said, walking back over and kissing her cheek. I leaned down, picking Josie up and kissing her face. “Be back, munch. I gotta go get Daddy.”

I left the house, getting into the car and beginning the drive to Alex’s dentist.

Once I got there I got out, walking in the front and looking around or Alex and his mom.

I found him, sitting in a chair, looking up at the ceiling fan and watching it spin. His cheeks were swollen, puffing out and making him really look like a chipmunk. I smiled softly, walking towards them.

“Hey, Lex,” I said, watching his eyes move over to me slowly before he smiled the best he could with the gauze in his mouth.

“Jack!” he greeted, taking it out and moving to stand up before wobbling and falling forward. I grabbed a hold of him, wrapping my arms around him and holding him up straight. He giggled, shoving his face in my neck and wrapping his arms back around me. “Mom, look! It’s Jack! I told you he wouldn’t leave me!”

She chuckled, standing up and handing me Alex’s hoodie.

“He wouldn’t put it on because he thought I was going to make him leave without you” she told me and I laughed, nuzzling my nose in Alex’s blonde hair.

“You ready to go now, babe?” I asked him and he nodded.

“Yeah!” he said, looking over at Isobel. “Mom! I’m going with Jack now!”

“I know,” she told him, standing up. “I’ll walk you out to the car.”

“Okay. Come on, Alex,” I said, supporting him with one arm as we walked out of the office. I helped him into the car, buckling him in before turning to Isobel.

“This is all the stuff that the doctor’s gave him. They gave him Percocets to take when he’s in pain. He might need one in a few hours. Try to get him to lay down and take a nap when you get home, maybe he’ll calm down a little bit,” Isobel told me, handing me the things she was carrying. “So this little suction thing is to clean out his gums after he eats, but only give him soft foods. Mashed potatoes and ice cream and stuff like that. And here’s a barf bag in case he happens to get sick on the ride home. Call me later and let me know how he’s doing, okay?”

“I will,” I told her, giving her a reassuring smile.

“Okay. I guess I’ll talk to you later,” she told me, pulling me in for a hug.

“I’ll keep you posted. Don’t worry,” I told her, pulling away and watching her nod, eyes flickering to Alex. “I’m sorry, I’m just- He’s still my baby, you know? I know he’s nineteen, but he’ll always be my baby.”

“I know,” I said, smiling. “Come check on him later if it makes you feel better. I’ll take good care of him though.”

“I know you will,” she told me giving me a smile. “I’ll see you later, Jack.”

“See you later,” I told her.

“Bye, mummy!” Alex yelled out the window as Isobel walked back to the car, making me chuckle as I moved to the driver’s side of mine.

“Goodbye, Alex,” she answered, smiling at her son.

I buckled my seatbelt, tossing the barf bag at him and laying the rest of the stuff in the backseat.

“What is this?” Alex asked, opening it and looking inside.

“It’s a barf bag just in case you puke while you’re still in the car,” I told him and he nodded, continuing to examine the bag. He opened and closed it, and I smiled a little.

I watched Alex out of the corner of my eye, seeing him lean forward to mess with the radio. He pressed the button to turn it on, causing music to begin blaring loudly. Alex’s eyes widened, looking at me. I reached over, turning the volume down and grinning at him.

“I-I just want to listen to Blink,” Alex told me, bottom lip jutting out and I giggled.

“You’re fine, babe,” I told him. “How are you feeling?”

“Fine,” he answered.

“You aren’t in any pain?” I asked and he shook his head.

He turned to look out the window, resting his head against it. I smiled softly, reaching my hand over and grabbing a hold of his.

“You’re cute,” I told him and he looked over at me.

“You’re pretty,” he told me and I cocked an eyebrow.

“Pretty?” I questioned and he nodded.

“Like a princess,” he answered. “Princess Jack. I’ll make you a crown.”

“Don’t princesses wear tiaras?” I asked.

“I-I don’t know,” he said, furrowing his eyebrows. “Fuck.”

“It’s not that big of a deal, babe,” I said, chuckling. “I’ll wear a crown if you want.”

“But princesses don’t wear crowns!” he insisted, frowning. “Now I have to make a whole new tiara! And what will I do with the crown?”

“You can wear it,” I told him. “You can be my prince.”

He continued to frown as I pulled into the driveway, shutting the car off and getting out to help him. We went inside and Alex looked around.

“Where’s my baby?” he asked, and I made a face.

“She’s taking a nap, Lex,” I lied, hearing my mom in the kitchen and knowing Josie was in there with her.

“Let me see her,” he said, trying to pull away from me, but I held him close.

“No, let her sleep. You can see her later” I told him and he frowned.

“I want to see her now!” he insisted, pouting.

“No,” I said. “Come on, let’s go lay down.”

“I don’t want to! I want to see my baby!” he whined, trying to push me away and stumbling.

“Alexander, you’re going to fall! Now quit it and come upstairs,” I told him, leading him towards the stairs.

“I just want my baby!” he whined as I semi-dragged him up the stairs. He let out a sob and I shook my head, opening our door and leading him inside.

“Alex, stop crying,” I said, watching tears roll down his cheeks.

“No! You hate me!” he sobbed, sitting on the bed. “I just wanted to hold my baby! I lover her! I hate you!”

“You are dramatic,” I said, laughing.

“Don’t laugh at me!” he yelled, glaring at me.

“I’m sorry,” I said, sitting down on the bed. “Come on, let’s lay down.”

“I don’t want to lay down!” he huffed and I rolled my eyes.

“Too bad,” I answered, pushing him to lay on his back. I unbuttoned his pants, pulling them off of him.

“Leave me alone,” he whined, giving up physically fighting me and I snorted. “I’m gonna run away.

“Yeah? Where you gonna go?” I asked, laying down next to him and pulling the blanket up over us.

“I don’t know. I’ll fly away,” he said, grunting as I pulled him closer to me. “Fly right out the window.”

“Second star to the right and straight on ‘til morning,” I told him teasingly.

He grunted again as he cuddled up to me.

“You’ll be my lost boy?” I asked, kissing his forehead and rubbing his chest.

“I’m the king of the lost boys,” he muttered, making me giggle.

“Go to sleep, Peter Pan.”
