“I gotta go to work,” Jack called out as I stepped on the bottom step.

“Okay,” I said, stepping towards the couch and seeing her was putting his shoes on. “When do you get off?”

“Eight,” he answered, moving to stand up. I pushed him back on the couch, cuddling him. “Ow, what are you doing?”

He giggled as I nuzzled my face into his neck, making him squirm.

“I don’t want you to go to work. I want you to stay here and cuddle with me all night,” I told him and he chuckled, kissing my hair and running his fingers through the hairs at the back of my neck.

“I have to go to work,” he said and I grunted, shaking my head. “I’ll get fired.”

“No. Call in sick,” I told him and he chuckled.

“It’s too late,” he said, pushing against my chest gently. “Your daughter is upstairs sleeping. Don’t forget about her.”

“Of course I’m not gonna forget about my daughter, retard,” I said and he rolled his eyes.

“I know you won’t,” he answered. “just don’t let her sleep too long or you can be the one to stay up with her all night.”

“Alright, deal,” I told him, smirking.

“Whatever,” he answered. “You know you would bring her to me after an hour.”

“No I wouldn’t,” I said. “I can handle her by myself.”

“Right,” he answered.

“I could! I’m taking care of her by myself while you’re at work!”

“You think you could take care of the baby without me?” Jack asked, cocking an eyebrow.

“I would never want to,” I answered, smirking and leaning up to kiss him.

“Yeah. That’s what I thought,” he said, smirking. “I have to go now. I’ll call you later.”

“Alright,” I said, sitting back down on the couch. “I love you. Have fun at work!”

“Ugh,” he answered, rolling his eyes and making me laugh. “I’m sure it’ll be a blast! Love you too, babe.”

He shut the door behind him as he left and I sighed. I glanced over at the clock, deciding to give Josie another half hour before I woke her up. I needed to find something to occupy myself until then.

I picked my phone up, scrolling through my messages. I got bored after a minute and set it down, turning on the television. I laid down on the couch, trying to get into whatever show was playing.

***

“Mm, bananas,” I hummed, feeding Josie a spoonful of mashed bananas. Her brown eyes lit up happily as she ate the food, opening her mouth for more as soon as she had swallowed it all. “You love bananas, huh?”

I smiled at her, feeding her another spoonful.

“We gotta go to the store, Jo,” I told her. “We gotta get present for Deedee ‘cause it’s almost Valentine’s day.”

”Da,” she said, reaching her hand out to me and I grinned.

“Yeah,” I answered, scooping up the last bit of bananas on the spoon. She ate it happily and I screwed the lid on the jar, tossing it into the trash before turning around to toss the spoon in the sink. “Come on, mama. Let’s clean you up so we can go to the store.”

I lifted Josie from her chair after I unbuckled her, settling her against my waist. I kissed her forehead gently, grinning as she squealed in delight.

“You’re such a daddy’s girl,” I said, tickling her foot. “I love it.”

“Da ba bb,” she cooed, rubbing her face against my shoulder. I scrunched up my nose, laughing as I carried her up the stairs.

“Thanks for getting banana all over my hoodie, monkey,” I answered with a chuckle. “Guess I have to change too.”

I walked into the bathroom, stopping to grab one of Josie’s towels and washcloths from the cupboards. I set them on the counter before sitting down on the floor with Josie. I sat her on the floor in front of me, grabbing her baby bath and setting it in the tub. She stared up at me expectantly and I grinned, leaning forward to kiss her cheek. I felt my beanie slip off my head as I sat back up, looking down and seeing it grasped in Josie’s little fingers.

“Why do you like Daddy’s hat so much, Jo-Jo?” I asked, chuckling and running my fingers through my messy hair. Josie ran her fingers over the soft gray material in her hands, cooing at it happily. I laughed, taking it from her hands and plopping it on her head over her blonde hair. “There.”

Her big brown eyes widened, hands flying up to feel the beanie sitting on top of her head. I laughed at the surprised expression on her face, taking my phone out of my hoodie pocket and turning it onto the camera. I took a picture of her before she had the chance to yank the hat off, sending it to Jack.

I put my phone back in my pocket, watching Josie yank the hat off her head. I turned on the water in the tub, adjusting the temperature so the water wasn’t too hot or too cold. I turned my attention back to Josie just in time to see her try to shove a bit of the beanie into her mouth.

“Hey!” I exclaimed, pulling it away from her. “You can’t eat that! I want to wear it.”

She made a face, letting out an angry screech.

“Oh shut up and eat your own hats,” I told her, laughing at her sour face. “Brat.”

“Da!” she yelled and I grinned.

“Come on, shorty. I have to take your diaper off so you can take your bath.”

I helped her stand up, holding onto her carefully as I undid the straps on her diaper. Once it was off I picked her up and set her in the tub.

****

“Yo, squirmy, stay still for like five seconds so I can get your diaper on,” I told Josie, putting her feet down once again as she tried to grab a hold of her toes. She kicked her feet, squealing as she tried to roll over. “Damnit, Jo!”

I finally got her diaper fastened, allowing her to grab her toes and attempt to shove them in her mouth.

“My life was so much easier when you didn’t know your feet existed,” I told Josie, laughing.

I picked up her shirt, pulling it on, followed by her pants.

“There! I’m done! Have at’cha toes!”

I stood up from the bed, pulling my banana covered hoodie off and tossing it into the dirty clothes. I grabbed one of Jack’s off the dresser, pulling it on and grinning as his familiar scent filled my nose. I shed my sweat pants for a pair of jeans before moving back to the bed where Josie was laying.

“Alright, baby cakes. Let’s go, I said, picking her up and carrying her out of the room.

*****

“Why are you freaking out?” I asked Josie, looking down at her. She let out a loud cry, wiggling in her carseat that was currently attached to the shopping cart. “Shhh, babe.”

She let out a louder cry and I sighed. I undid her strap, lifting her out of the seat carefully and holding her to my chest.

She snuggled her face into my chest, sniffling as her cries died down.

“There,” I said, rubbing her back gently, “now you can chill out.”

I nuzzled my face into her hair, kissing the top of her head soothingly as I swayed. I looked along the rows of cards, searching for a cute on.

I saw one that looked sort of cute, but was of course on the bottom row. I tried to awkwardly bend over to grab it without dropping Josie, but ended up just plopping down on the floor with her in my lap.

“You just gotta make everything difficult, huh?” I asked her quietly, hearing her let out a bubbling noise with her mouth. “Dork.”

I went through a few different cards, not finding any that I liked. I found a maybe card, setting it down in my lap before quickly having to grab it away from Josie as she tried to shove it in her mouth. She let out a wail and I rolled my eyes.

“Deedee is not gonna want a card you slobbered all over, Jo,” I told her and she screeched angrily. “You can yell all you want. I’m not letting you eat his card.”

“Are you finding everything alright?” I heard a voice say, looking up to see a young girl standing at the end of the aisle. She looked to be about seventeen and I saw her eyes settle on Josie, who was currently trying to stand up in my lap.

“Yeah, my daughter’s just being herself,” I answered, feeling Josie yank my beanie off. I sighed, shaking my head and chuckling as she smiled brightly up at me.

“She’s adorable,” the girl responded, laughing. “How old is she?”

“Thanks,” I answered, running my fingers over her soft blonde hair. “She’ll be five months on Friday.”

“What’s her name?” she asked.

“Josie,” I responded, seeing the baby’s head turn to look up at me.

“Da,” she said and I snorted, hearing the girl laugh.

“I’m sorry I’m asking so many questions. I probably look like a huge creep,” the girl said, biting her lip. “I just... I found out last week that I’m pregnant.”

“Congratulations,” I said, smiling at her.

“Thank you,” she answered, but I saw her smile slowly falter. “I just wish I wasn’t the only one excited about it.”

“Shitty baby daddy?”

“He ran for the hills. After telling me it couldn’t possibly be his baby,” she answered and I gave her a sympathetic look.

“That’s a pussy move,” I answered, shaking my head. “You’re better off without him then. Trust me.”

“Yeah. I’m starting to realize that,” she said, nodding. “I just wish my mom didn’t hate me.”

“I’m sure she doesn’t hate you,” I answered.

“She told me. She told me that I was stupid for making the same mistakes she did with her life. She wanted me to um... get rid of the baby,” she said, looking down at her feet. “Which I could never bring myself to do. It would be beyond selfish, and I love her- or him- so much already. You know?”

“Yeah, I do,” I nodded, looking down at Josie. “Your mom is probably just in shock. Mine wanted nothing to do with Josie until like a month before she was born. Let her get used to the idea. She’ll come around.”

“I really hope so,” the girl answered, before she shook her head. “Oh god, I’m so sorry. I just like, vented to you and we don’t even know each other.”

“It’s fine,” I told her, chuckling. “You obviously needed to tell someone. I’m Alex, by the way.”

“I’m Cassadee,” she answered, giving me a small smile. “Thanks for listening to my rambling, Alex.”

“Any time, Cassadee,” I said, giving her a genuine smile. “Seriously, don’t sweat it. Sometimes we all just need someone to listen.”

“So are you looking for a Valentine for your girlfriend?” she asked and I shook my head.

“Boyfriend, actually,” I answered, holding Josie carefully in my arms as I stood up.

“Awh, how sweet,” she answered, smiling. “Are you ready to check out?”

“Yeah,” I answered, settling Josie back into her carseat and hearing her grunt unhappily.

Cassadee smiled, nodding towards the cash register. “I’ll take care of you guys.”

♠ ♠ ♠The only good thing that's come from me being ridiculously sick is that I actually had time to sit down and write.
I'm so sorry every chapter takes me so long :/
It's like all I do during the week is wake up, go to school, come home, do homework, sleep, and then repeat.
And on the weekends I've been super busy for absolutely no reason.
I'm just really sorry, guys. I love you <3 I don't want you to think I forgot about you.
