“Me and Deedee are gonna drink eggnog and you’re gonna go to bed,” I said, sticking my tongue out at Josie and hearing Jack chuckle.

He moved closer to me, stroking Josie’s cheek and looking down at her.

“Santa’s coming tonight, baby,” he told her, smiling as she stared up at him in wonder. “He’s gonna bring you fun presents and toys to play with.”

“You wanna feed her?” I asked Jack and he shrugged.

“I don’t care. She just needs to eat before she starts getting cranky and tired,” he said, looking at the clock. “Which will probably be very soon.”

I nodded, smiling and passing her into his arms.

“I’ll go make her a bottle then,” I said, standing up and going into the kitchen.

“You’re such a pretty girl, Josie,” I heard Jack say to her and I smiled as I prepared her bottle. “I love you.”

I heard the baby coo, letting out a string of babbles.

“Yeah? Well I love you more,” Jack said, making Josie coo again. “Sweet baby girl.”

I brought back the warm bottle, shaking it gently as I gave it to Jack. Josie’s eyes widened as she looked at it, kicking her feet excitedly.

“Oh, you so excited!” Jack said, giggling as she smiled at him. “You a little piggy.”

I laughed, kissing her soft blonde hair as I settled myself next to them.

I looked at Jack, who stared back at me with tired eyes. He puckered his lips and I smiled, giving him a soft kiss. He rested his head on my shoulder, looking down at Josie as she drank.

I heard a noise on the stairs and looked over, seeing May walking down.

“She’s still awake?” she asked, smiling down at her niece.

“Yeah. Daddy let her nap for too long earlier,” Jack said, lifting his head and smiling at me teasingly.

“You could have woken her up too,” I said and he chuckled.

“Yeah, but it’s easier to blame you,” he said and I rolled my eyes.

“Mom and Dad are sleeping already,” she said and Jack raised an eyebrow.

“Already?” I asked, checking to see it was only nin.

“Old people,” Jack mumbled, shaking his head. “I guess since they’re grandparents now they’ve decided to act like it.

May laughed, nodding.

“Where’s Joe? Please don’t tell me he’s sleeping too,” Jack said and she shook her head.

“He’s on the phone,” she answered, glancing upstairs with a smirk. “I think he’s got a girl in New York.”

“Ooh,” Jack said, wiggling his eyebrows. “How scandalous.”

I rolled my eyes at him, looking over at May who was searching through the television guide.

“Go get me a diaper,” Jack said, and I looked down at Josie, finishing her bottle but still looking around wide-eyed.

“You should have changed her before you fed her,” I said, standing up.

“It doesn’t matter. She’s still wide awake,” he said, taking the bottle from her mouth. “There’s a couple diapers in the diaper bag. Just grab one of those so you don’t have to go all the way upstairs.”

I lifted the diaper bag, unzipping it and grabbing the diaper and wipes. I tossed them onto the cushion next to him before going into the kitchen to grab us some drinks.

“Josie, leave your freaking toes alone. I’m trying to put your diaper on,” I heard Jack say, hearing the baby squeal and May laugh. “Child! You’re so difficult.”

I walked back into the room carrying three cups, handing one to May and sitting down with the other two. I looked over to see Jack fastening Josie’s diaper, kissing her belly before blowing a raspberry on it. Josie squealed, kicking and waving her hands around Jack’s head.

“You keep playing with her, we’re never going to get her to sleep,” I told him, setting his drink on the table.

“She’ll fall asleep eventually,” he said, sitting up and cradling her.

“Maybe you should rock her,” May said and Jack shrugged.

“I don’t think she’s tired,” he said, shaking his head. “Just let her play until she tires herself out.”

“That’s fine with me, babe,” I answered.

He lifted her up in front of him, kissing her nose.

“Daddy,” he cooed, moving her close to me.

“Hi, sweetface,” I said, licking the eggnog from my lips before kissing her cheek. “You’re perfect.”

She cooed, reaching her hand and settling it against my lips. I kissed her fingers, watching her smile brightly.

“Such a happy baby. I love you,” I told her, blowing a raspberry on her hand. She squealed again, pulling her hand away and kicking her feet.

“You wanna go play with toys?” Jack asked, standing up and carrying her to her little play area in the living room. Her eyes gazed up at the blinking lights of the Christmas tree. She stared up at it in wonder, eyes alight as the lights changed from red to blue to green. My heart swelled at how precious the moment was, feeling Jack settle into my arms as he sipped his drink.

“Look at Josie,” I said, nodding at the baby. He looked down, smiling as we watched her reach her tiny hands up towards the lights. I squeezed him in my arms, watching May lean down to take a picture of her.

“That’s so adorable,” he said, taking a drink, “and there is a lot of rum in this.”

I chuckled, kissing his cheek.

“I’m sorry,” I said and he shook his head.

“No, it’s yummy,” he said, taking another drink. “I wonder how long it’ll take my dad to notice we keep drinking the rum.”

“Like he doesn’t know,” May said, snorting.

“I think he has already. There was a new bottle in there that wasn’t there last week,” I said.

“Well, apparently he doesn’t care then,” Jack said, shrugging.

I heard Josie make a noise, kicking her feet and grunting.

“Hush, Josie,” Jack said, leaning his head against my chest and closing his eyes. Josie continued to squirm, letting out a cry.

“Josie,” I cooed, playing with Jack’s bleached bangs. “You’re perfectly fine, babe.”

She continued to cry out, grunting and curling her hands into small fists.

“You don’t need to be held, Jo-Jo,” Jack said, chuckling. “Play with toys.”

She let out a loud noise, shaking her fists and I laughed.

“She thinks so,” I told him and he shrugged.

“She can deal,” He said, shaking his head.

There were footsteps on the stairs, Joe appearing at the bottom a few seconds later.

“Hey,” he said, pausing and glancing around the room until his eyes settled on Josie. “Why are you ignoring the baby?”

“Oh, trust me, she’s impossible to ignore,” Jack said.

“She was playing until she realized she wasn’t the center of attention anymore. Now she wants to be the princess again,” I explained and he cooed.

“Awh, but she is the princess,” he said, walking closer to his niece.

“Yeah, but the princess doesn’t need to be held 24/7. I set her down to lay for a little bit. She can deal with that,” Jack said.

“Oh well. I wanna hold my niece,” Joe said, picking her up. She cooed, kicking her feet and touching Joe’s cheek. “Hi, pretty girl.”

She smiled, looking over at Jack when Joe sat down on the couch.

“Don’t smile at me, monster,” he said, scrunching up his nose. “You’re so spoiled.”

“Ba!” she said and I laughed.

“Well ba to you too!” he said back.

“What does that mean?” Joe questioned and Jack shrugged.

“I have no idea, but she yells it all the time,” he said.

“She’s probably swearing at us,” May said and we nodded.

“Probably,” Jack agreed, emptying his cup.

Joe laid her back in his arms, smiling and talking to her. She kicked her feet, beginning to fuss and turn her head.

“Sit her up,” Jack instructed, “she likes to look around.”

Joe sat her up, supporting her back. He tickled her foot and she smiled, looking down at it. She grabbed a hold of her toes, cooing happily.

“She’s so cute,” he said, smiling.

“She is,” Jack said, smiling.

Joe kissed the top of her head and she turned her focus from her toes and onto him. She rubbed her eyes, laying her head back against his chest. He hugged her closer and she grunted, making a face.

“She’s tired,” Jack said.

“Finally,” I added, watching her ball her fists as her face scrunched up. “Josie.”

She opened her mouth, letting out a wail. Jack chuckled, taking her from Joe and cradling her to his chest.

“Aw, sleepy baby,” he cooed, kissing her forehead gently. She rubbed her eyes again before moving her thumb to her mouth and sucking on it. She whimpered, looking up at me with a pout.

“Aw, princess,” I said, kissing her forehead. “Go to sleep, baby. You won’t miss anything.”

“I’m gonna go rock her,” Jack said and I nodded, smoothing my hand over her soft hair.

“Night night, baby. I love you,” I said, kissing her gently.

“Good night, sweetheart,” May said, kissing her forehead when Jack brought her over.

“Good night, Josie,” Joe said, blowing her a kiss.

“I’ll be back in a minute, I hope,” Jack said, carrying Josie up the stairs.

“Santa presents now?” May asked, looking at me.

“No. We’ll wait for Jack,” I said and she nodded.

“So, Joe,” she said, turning to him with a mischievous smirk, “tell us about that girl of yours.”

Joe rolled his eyes at his sister, but the smile on his face let us know she was right.

“Her name’s Michelle,” he said, “and that’s all you really need to know about her.”

“Oh really?” May asked, cocking an eyebrow.

“Really,” he said, standing up and moving into the kitchen.

“Well then,” she said, looking over at me, “how’s your love life, Alex?”

I rolled my eyes, taking a sip of my drink. “Awful. Pure fucking hell.”

“Oh you poor thing,” she said, laughing and turning her attention back to some Christmas movie that was playing.
