I stroked Jack’s hair as I read one of the books he had picked up a while ago. It was all about the baby and her development and what to do to prepare for her arrival.

I looked down at Jack’s sleeping face. I smiled, knowing he’d barely slept the last couple nights. I was glad he had finally gotten a chance to get some sleep.

I kissed his forehead, going back to reading the book. I heard a knock on the door and I glanced up.

“Come in,” I called out softly, looking down at Jack to make sure I hadn’t woken him.

“Alex,” May said, poking her head into the room. “There’s someone here to see you.”

I put a bookmark in my book, setting it down before carefully moving Jack’s head off my lap and onto a pillow. I got off the bed, following May out of the room.

“Would you like some coffee or tea while you wait?” I heard Joyce’s voice ask.

“Tea would be nice. If it’s not too much trouble,” I heard another voice say, and I froze. I knew that voice. Why was she here?

“No trouble at all,” Joyce answered, and I heard the water running as she filled up the kettle.

“Alex will be out in a minute,” May announced as she walked back into the kitchen.

I chewed on my lip, preparing myself to enter the room. I turned, walking inside and seeing her sitting at the table.

“Mom,” I said, and she looked up at me.

“Alex,” she said softly.

I stood there, and we stared at each other, neither sure of what to do next.

“We’ll give you some privacy,” Joyce said after she put the kettle onto the stove. She and May left the room, and I looked back at my mother.

“S-so, how have you been?” she asked and I licked my lips.

“Fine,” I said, crossing my arms and leaning against the counter.

“That’s…that’s great,” she said, folding her hands. I watched her twiddle her thumbs nervously, and I sighed.

“What are you doing here, mom?” I asked.

“I wanted to see how you were,” she told me.

“If that’s all you really wanted, you should have just called,” I told her.

“Alex, I knew you wouldn’t return my calls if I tried,” she said, sighing.

“And why would I, mom? After you practically threw me out onto the street.”

She frowned, looking down at her hands.

“I’m sorry, Alex,” she said. “I shouldn’t have let that happen. It was wrong of me to not stop you.”

“So why did you?” I asked. “Why did you just sit there and let Dad say such horrible things about me?”

“I was in shock. I didn’t know what to do or say,” she told me. “I’m sorry, honey. I really am.”

“So what made you change your mind?” I asked. “I haven’t heard from you in three months, and you suddenly decide to come back into my life?”

“I realized I made a horrible decision, Alex,” she told me, and I nodded. “I started realizing it after you gave me that picture.”

“The picture of Josie?” I asked her.

“I-is that what you guys are naming her?”

“Yes,” I answered. “Josie Reagan.”

“That’s very pretty,” she said, smiling.

“D-do you wanna see her nursery?” I asked, and she nodded.

“If that’s okay…”

“It’s fine,” I told her, and she stood up. The kettle whistled just as we were moving towards the doorway. I hurried over, shutting the burner off and taking the kettle off of the stove before it woke Jack up. I poured two cups, putting tea bags in them so they would be ready when we came back downstairs.

I motioned my mom out of the room, leading her up the stairs. I turned the knob of Josie’s room, which now had her name on the front of it. I led my mom inside, looking around the very pink room.

“It’s adorable,” my mom smiled, looking around and taking it all in.

“Joyce and May decorated it,” I said, laying my hand on the rocking chair.

“I still have your old rocking horse. Would you like me to bring that over?” she asked, and I felt something in my chest.

“If you want,” I said, smiling.

“How far along is… Jack?” she asked, almost awkwardly.

“Eight months,” I told her, and her eyes widened.

“Really? She’ll be here sooner than I though.”

“She’s scheduled to be here on September 16,” I told her.

“I’ll just have to go home and free up that day then,” she said, and I smiled.

“Would you like another picture?” I asked, and she nodded. “They’re downstairs. That’s where we’ve been sleeping lately.”

“Why?”

“Jack has a hard time going up and down the stairs. He gets really short of breath,” I explained.

“Yeah. Being pregnant sucks sometimes,” she said.

We walked back into the kitchen. I grabbed the cups, taking the teabags out and throwing them away. I gave my mom her cup, setting mine down on the table. I walked out of the kitchen and towards the guest room. I opened the door slowly and carefully, peeking my head in to see that Jack was still asleep. I tiptoed in, slowly going over to our dresser and picking up the ultrasounds. I left the room, closing the door quietly. I walked back out to the kitchen.

“We can go into the living room if you like. It would probably be more comfortable,” I told my mom, picking up my cup of tea.

“Sure,” she said, picking her own cup up.

She followed me into the living room, where My and Joyce were.

“Is Jack still sleeping?” May asked me, sitting up so the other seats of the couch were available.

“Yeah,” I told her. “He needs it.”

I sat down next to her, allowing my mom the arm seat. I took a sip of my tea, before setting it down on the coffee table. I placed my feet up on the edge of it, opening up the little photo album Jack had put the ultrasound pictures in.

“Okay, this was, like, four months, I think,” I said, pointing to the first picture

“Where’s the previous ones?” she asked.

“There aren’t any. We found out when he was four months pregnant,” I told her.

“Oh, wow,” she replied.

“Yeah,” I answered, turning the page. “And this is when we found out we were having a girl.”

“I have this picture, don’t I?” Mom asked, and I nodded.

“We had to get about six copies to make sure everyone got one,” I said, laughing.

I continued to show her all the pictures, excited and overjoyed that my mom was finally sharing in my excitement about my baby girl.

I heard the bedroom door open, and I glanced over my shoulder to see Jack walking into the room. He was in just a pair of basketball shorts, swollen stomach protruding out. He fixed his glasses, eyes focusing on me before glancing to my left. I watched him furrow his eyebrows, but he continued to walk closer.

“Hey, babe,” he said, leaning down to give me a kiss. I ignored the way my mom tensed in discomfort, remembering this was the first time she had ever seen Jack and I kiss. He stood up, looking down at my mom with a tired smile. “Hi, Isobel.”

“Hello, Jack,” she said, and I watched her eyes travel down to his protruding belly.

“You feeling better?” I asked Jack.

“Mhm,” he hummed. “I still have a headache, though.”

I stood up, gesturing for him to sit down.

“Josie has the hiccups,” he told me, giggling. I watched him run his fingers around his belly button, and noticed my mom watching closely.

“She’ll kick for you if you want to feel,” I told her, and Jack looked up.

“Oh yeah. She’s a kicker,” he said.

My mom nodded, lifting a hand. She put it on Jack’s stomach gingerly. I watched him move it, holding my breath and waiting. I watched her face light up, looking at me. My face split into a grin, and I felt my heart leap in happiness.
