“Jack, I’m gonna run over to Rian’s really quick before the appointment, okay?” I told him, pulling my t-shirt on over my head.

He pulled the shower curtain back a little, poking his head out. The water dripped down from his black hair, dropping to the floor.

“Okay. Just remember it’s at three thirty,” he told me.

“I’ll be there. I promise,” I told him. I kissed him gently, the moisture from his face rubbing off onto mine.

“Okay. See you later, babe,” he said, closing the shower curtain.

I left the bathroom, walking downstairs. May glanced up at me from her place on the couch as I put my shoes on.

“Where are you going?” she asked.

“I left my book at Rian’s yesterday. And he wanted to give me something his mom picked up for Josie.”

“Who’s Josie?” she asked.

“The baby,” I answered.

“You guys named her?” she asked, eyes lighting up.

“Sort of,” I shrugged. “Nothing’s official yet.”

“Okay. See you later,” she said, and I waved before walking out the door.

I checked my phone, seeing that I had forty-five minutes until the doctor’s appointment. I got inside my car, starting it and pulling out of the driveway. I drove toward Rian’s, turning the music up. It was about a five minute drive. I pulled into their driveway, seeing his mom working in the garden. I got out of the car, putting the sunglasses I wear while driving on the top of my head.

“Hello, Alex.” She smiled when she saw me walking up the steps.

“Hey,” I answered. “Rian told you had something for the baby…?”

“Oh! Of course. Let me get cleaned up and I’ll go get it. The boys are in the house,” she said, standing up and dusting off her hands.

“Thanks,” I smiled.

I walked towards the door, opening it and slipping inside. I took my shoes off before going upstairs to Rian’s room. I went inside, finding him and Zack playing xbox.

“Is this all you two do?” I asked them, and Rian glanced up at me.

“Sup, dude,” he greeted. “Your book’s on the desk. Thanks for letting me borrow it.”

“You’re welcome,” I told him. I sat on the bed next to Zack, watching as he shot down Rian’s character. “Ri, you’re worse than Jack at this game.”

“I don’t think that’s possible,” Zack told me, putting his controller down.

“Jack’s pretty awful,” I agreed.

“Can you run us to the store really fast?” Rian asked. “My mom won’t let me take the car.”

“You gonna give me gas money?” I asked, raising an eyebrow.

“I’ll give you ten bucks,” he said.

“I’m just messing with you. Yeah, I can,” I told him.

“Cool. I’m in the need of some junk food, and my mom has decided she’s dieting and has gotten rid everything with fat in it,” Rian explained.

“It’s cool. I’ll take you. I just gotta be to the doctor’s by three-thirty,” I said.

We got up, walking downstairs. Rian’s mom was in the living room, holding a shopping bag in her hand. She handed it to me as I walked in.

“Rian mentioned you were having a girl. I saw this the other night when I was at the store and thought it was cute,” she told me.

I opened the bag, seeing pink fabric. I pulled it out, feeling my heart tug at the sight of the baby pink onesie. There was a tiara on the front, followed by glittery lettering that spelled out “My daddy calls me princess.” There was a tutu that slipped over the pink onesie.

“This is beautiful. Really. Thank you, Kathi,” I said, hugging her tightly.

“You’re welcome, sweetheart,” she said. “If you need anything else, let me know. I can keep my eye for you two.”

“O-okay. Thank you,” I told her, putting the outfit back into the bag.

“We’ll be right back, okay, mom? Rian said.

“Where are you going?”

“Running to the store,” he told her.

“Alright. Be safe.”

“We’ll try,” he called back as we walked out the door.

I put the bag in the backseat when I got in the car. I waited for the other two to get inside before driving away towards the nearest 7-Eleven.

When we got there we stepped inside. I didn’t really want much, but decided to get a coffee. I stepped up to the counter, setting the drink down as I got out my wallet. I looked up, seeing Tony standing in front of me. I tried to hide how startled I was, quickly passing the money over to him. He didn’t acknowledge me, which I figured was a good sign.

After I paid for the coffee, I went over to Rian and Zack. I told them that I was going to wait outside until they were done. Truthfully, I didn’t feel comfortable around Tony. I was positive that by now he had heard about mine and Brynn’s break up. What I didn’t know was how much she had told him.

I walked outside, breathing in the fresh air. I leaned against the wall, checking my phone. I had about twenty minutes until the appointment. I would definitely make it on time. I sipped my coffee, kicking the gravel near my feet.

Suddenly I felt a hand gripping onto my arm. I was jerked sideways, making the hot coffee spill onto me. The liquid burned against my shoulder, staining the light fabric of my t-shirt. I swore, too startled to move as I was pushed against the side of the store.

“You think it’s funny to fuck with my little cousin’s heart, Gaskarth?!” I heard a voice demand, and I looked up into Tony’s angry blue eyes.

“T-Tony,” I gasped, and he shoved me, making me hit the floor.

“Well, I’m gonna make you rethink that. Me and my buddy here are gonna make sure you never fuck with another girl again.” He gave me a swift kick in the ribs, making me groan. “Not that you would want to. Faggot.”

I felt him pull me up by my shirt before punching me in the head. A dull ache was beginning already, and I tried to squirm away.

“Stop fucking moving!” he yelled, punching me in the ribs. I felt the air being knocked out of me as he did it again. I gasped, collapsing. “You’re a pussy! Stand up and fight!”

I stumbled, trying to get to my feet. There was no point though, because my knees gave out seconds later.

“You’re fucking pathetic,” he muttered, hitting me in the nose. I heard the crunch, felt the searing pain, and quickly tasted the blood running down my face and into my mouth. “Brynn is way too good for you.”

I felt more slams to my torso, bruises forming as knuckles roughly met my skin.

“Get up!” he exclaimed.

I tried once more, but the pain was to much. I was too dizzy to see straight. I fell back, cracking my head against the cement wall of the store behind me. I blinked, feeling hazy as everything started fading into black.

****

“Alex!” I heard someone yelling my name.

“Alex? Where did you?” Zack’s voice called out, concern leaking out in his voice.

“Where the fuck is he?” I heard Rian ask. I groaned, opening my eyes and blinking against the harsh sunlight. I tried to move, but my body ached and burned. “Alex?!”

His voice was getting closer, and I groaned again as I tried to lift myself up.

“He’s gonna be late,” I heard Zack say and my eyes widened. Fuck, the appointment. I was gonna be so late. Jack’s going to kill me.

“R-Ri,” I croaked, voice cracked and worn. “Ri-Rian.”

I heard shuffling, and a shadow fell over me as a body blocked the sunlight from me.

“Fuck!” I heard him cry out. “F-fuck! Zack!”

I heard hurried footsteps coming towards me, and then they stopped.

“Shit,” I heard Zack exclaim. “Who the fuck-”

“I don’t know. Help me get him to the car. We need to get him home,” Rian said.

“Th-the baby,” I groaned as Rian tried to lift me up.

“We gotta get you home first,” Rian told me, helping me to my feet.

“B-but I promised Jack,” I groaned, leaning against him.

“He’ll understand,” Rian answered.

“God, his nose. Zack said, coming to my other side. “I think we should take him to the hospital.

“B-but I-” I repeated.

“Alex, you’re nose is broken. Something else might be broken too. You have to go to the hospital.”

“But I promised!”

“You have no choice, Alex.”
