“Come here, Jack, we have something to show you!” May yelled as I walked in the door.

“Can it wait ten seconds?! ‘Cause I really gotta pee!” I exclaimed, handing her a bag full of the baby clothes Alex and I had just bought. My mom had given us money after breakfast and then forced us out the door. I still wasn’t sure why, but I was glad I had been given the chance to go pick out clothes for my daughter.

When I was finished in the bathroom, I walked out and felt May quickly grab my hand and pull me towards the stairs.

“Yo, sis, slow down! You’re gonna make me fall and then I’ll never get back up!” I exclaimed.

I followed her slowly up the stairs, feeling Alex’s hand placed on my lower back.

“You okay?” he questioned.

“I’m fine. I guess May doesn’t seem to notice I have a beach ball in my stomach,” I snapped at my sister.

“Oh, just shut up and move your pregnant ass along,” she retorted. She was standing at the top of the stairs, grinning at me and practically bouncing.

“What are you so excited about?!” I demanded, and she grabbed my hand again. I waddled along behind her, trying to keep up with her insistent tugging. “May, I swear-”

“Shh,” she shushed me, turning around quickly. We had stopped in front of Joe’s old room. I gave her a confused look, and she shook her head. “This is a very special moment, Jack.”

“Why?” I asked her.

“You’ll see when mom opens the door,” she said, voice growing slightly louder when she mentioned mom’s name.

The door opened slowly and she squeezed my hand. I glanced around the room, mouth dropping slightly. The walls had been painted a soft white, and there were pink curtain hanging in the windows. There was a white changing table filled with diapers and wipes, along with a matching white dresser next to a crib. The crib was covered in pink sheets, along with soft blankets and stuffed animals. The mobile hanging above it had pink flowers and bunnies and other little animals hanging from it. Hanging above the crib was a collage of all the current ultrasounds we had. I put my hand over my mouth, feeling my eyes fill with tears.

“We wanted to paint her name above the crib, but we know you haven’t picked one out yet,” my mom said, watching my eyes scan the room.

“So when you decide, let us know and we’ll get some more paint and do it,” May answered.

“It’s so beautiful,” I whimpered, tears rolling down my cheeks. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome, honey,” My mom said, hugging me. I let out a sob, leaning down into her arms. “Oh, baby, don’t cry. My granddaughter needs a room to sleep in. It was no trouble at all.”

“Thank you,” I muttered again.

I looked over at Alex, who was running his fingers along the frame of an old wooden rocking chair. Next to it was a small, child-sized one.

“I used this chair to rock all three of my babies to sleep. It worked very well most of the time,” my mom told him, smiling. “And the small rocking chair has been passed along all the girls in my family. My grandmother used it, as did my mom, and myself, and then May. And Jack also.” She sent me a playful smile. “So now she can use it.”

Alex smiled, running his fingers over it again.

“It needs to be fixed a little since Jack broke it,” May added, motioning to the missing rod.

“It broke when you were both playing with it,” mom scolded. “Plus, she won’t be sitting in it for another year or so, so we have time to get it fixed up.”

“It’s gorgeous,” Alex spoke, and I smiled.

“Yeah it is,” I agreed.

“Thank you so much,” Alex told them.

“It’s what family does,” May told him, and I could see in his eyes that something was off.

“Now you guys can put the clothes away. Fill up the dresser,” my mom said, placing the bags down. “We’ll leave you two alone to do that.”

She gave May a look, and my sister walked out the door behind her in a half-hearted fashion.

“What’s wrong, baby?” I asked Alex as soon as the door was shut. He shook his head, leaning down to start taking out the outfits. “Don’t you like all of the stuff?”

“Of course I do,” he said. “This is amazing. Your family is amazing.”

He stopped talking, finishing his sentence quietly and looking towards the floor.

“Alex,” I said gently, trying to carefully sit down on the floor next to him. I ended up almost falling in his lap, and he laughed at me. I grabbed his hand, brushing the dark hair away from his brown eyes. “What’s going on in there?”

He looked away, staring down at his legs for a few seconds before sighing.

“I wish I had even half the relationship you have with your mom,” He said quietly. I frowned, squeezing his hand. “I’d give anything to have an understanding mom who I could talk to about our relationship; who I could tell about the baby; who would buy her things and pass down family heirlooms.”

“Have you tried to talk to her about it?” I asked, and he bit his lip.

“No. As soon as I tell her, she’ll go tell my dad and have to talk to him about the whole situation. It’s impossible,” he answered.

“I’m sorry, baby. I really am,” I told him, laying my head on his chest.

“It’s not your fault. You didn’t make my family homophobic and fucked up,” he answered, and I closed my eyes.

“You’ll always be part of my family,” I said, and I felt him kiss my forehead.

“You’re the only family I need,” he responded. “You and her.” I felt his fingers rubbing softly along my stomach.

“She needs a name,” I informed him, feeling the fluttering of her moving inside of my stomach.

“Eh, we got three months,” Alex answered, and I rolled my eyes.

“I would like to name her before she’s out, not when we’re bringing her home from the hospital,” I told him.

“Nah,” Alex answered, and I rolled my eyes.

“Shut up, daddy,” I responded.

“Are you falling asleep on me?” he asked, nuzzling his nose in my hair.

“Psh, no,” I answered, feeling my eyes growing heavy. I closed them again, breathing in deeply.

“Jack, go lay down,” he said. “Jack, you know I can’t carry you if you do fall asleep.”

“Mhm,” I hummed, wrapping my arms around his waist.

“Fine. Then you can sleep on the floor,” he said, but I barely listened as I slipped off to sleep.

**

I opened my eyes, groaning at the ache in my back. I sat up slowly, seeing Alex sitting on the floor across from me, flipping through a small book.

“Why the fuck did you let me sleep on the floor?” I snapped, and he glanced up at me before looking back at the page.

“I told you to go to bed. You’re too stubborn to listen,” he answered and I frowned.

“What are you reading?” I asked, rubbing my stomach and feeling the baby kick.

“Your mom bought us a baby name book,” he answered. “I found it on the dresser when I was putting the clothes away.”

“Oh, now you wanna pick out names,” I said, and he smirked.

“I’m just highlighting names I like,” he answered. “I was thinking you could use another color and pick yours out, too.”

“Good idea, baby,” I responded. “What’s your favorite so far?”

“I don’t know. I’m still looking,” he shrugged.

“There has to be one you really like,” I said, standing up and walking over to him. I sat down next to him he pulled me into his lap. I leaned my head on his shoulder, looking over the high-lighted names on the page.

“What’s up with all the ‘H’ names?” I asked , looking down the list.

“The book goes in alphabetical order, and I’m picking out names from each letter,” Alex answered.

“You sure you aren’t high-lighting the whole damn book?” I asked him, laughing as I flipped through pages and saw all the strips of yellow.

“It’s hard to decide. I want her name to be pretty and perfect, just like she is,” he said, and I smiled, feeling her kick.

“She heard that,” I told him.

“Good. I’ll make sure she hears it every day of her life,” he said, rubbing my stomach. I leaned forward, kissing his lips.

“She’s not even born yet and she’s already your princess.”

“Fuck yes she is. She’s my baby girl. I’ll do anything for her.”

“I’ve noticed,” I said, smiling to myself.

He wrapped his arms around me, kissing my temple and cuddling me.
