Couldn't quite resist...

(From the "Buffy" Season 4 episode "The Initiative")

(Riley has just made a spectacularly unsuccessful attempt to make conversation with Buffy)

Riley : I can't believe it. I choked.
Willow : You really, really did.
Riley : You don't understand. I'm good at things. That's what I do. Work hard, apply myself, get it done.
Willow : Well, you failed extremely well.

i followed that game via updates during other games that were aired yesterday...I wonder if it was simply a misplaced sense of security, that there was no Way App State could defeat the great Wolverines?
Lesson learned, wisdom acquired, I hope.

Don't forget, the wimp underdogs were PAID $400,000 by the big-time arrogant team.

If it makes you feel any better, UofM is still the best team in the Big Ten, and will probably be sufficiently motivated by these results to prove that to everyone in spectacular fashion.

Unfortunately, I doubt very much if they will be able to gain enough AP Poll support to get back to a National Championship game... Not that they would win anyway, considering being the best in the Big Ten this season is not saying a whole hell of a lot...

If Division I-A college football actually got it's act together they wouldn't have to worry about "AP Poll support" to get to a National Championship game. There would be an actual tournament and the best team would actually win. Just like there is in Division I-AA. I believe the winner of their tournament was

...

Appalachian State

Glad to see a Div I-A team get its comeuppance. :-)

Since you mentioned soccer, you will probably be aware of the tradition of cup competitions all over the world, where any team in the country, professional, semi-pro, or amateur, can compete in a huge, season-long knockout tournament (parallel to the national league). The French cup in 2000 was one of the best "any given Sunday" stories in sports history: a scrappy bunch of amateurs from Calais scoring victory after victory over highly-paid professional teams, including the defending league champions in the quarterfinals, and the defending cup champions in the semifinals, before finally falling in overtime in the final.

On paper, a game can look like no contest... but they play the game on a field, not on paper.
