During my trip I got to see a guy changing a light bulb on the wing of the plane I was already in. The guy took sooooo long to get there. I wondered if he had been called in from home to do it. I remembered you telling me the mechanics didn't necessarily stay at the airport.
It is very likely he was called from home. Basic maintenance, cleaning and inspecting can be done by the land crew, who also load luggage, though there is a specific person for fuel. Repairs are not something that is needed with every flight so it would be a waste of $ to keep the mechanic there all the time doing nothing. It may cause delays to call him from home, but it is overall cheaper.
Last time we had to wait a long time it was almost an hour and a few people started complaining about possibly missing connections. Though I'm pretty sure they all made it... if they ran.
