Wear lots of tight pants and teeter around in high heels

I have had the luxury of being able to start over with ALL my clothes, thank you bariatric surgery. So, not being in touch with what to wear and how to wear it due to total indifference as none of them fit me before, I've been reading a bunch of fashion blogs in the run up to my trip to London and Paris.
My work day clothes are very simple. Washable ( Read more... )

Ironically, I'm tempted to ask you where to buy that scrub top. That's exactly the sort of thing I wear, quite a few with cartoon characters, dating back to my days as a patient care tech with my home base on a floor that included pediatrics. I was worried about wearing them where I currently work at first, but cheapness won out. Turns out my 70+ residents respond with comments like, "Oh, that brings back memories of when my daughter used to watch/read ..." *shrugs*

That said, I hear you loud and clear on wanting to wear things that are not your work uniform. I never used to be so into big earrings, but now that I *can't* wear them to work, I nearly always wear danglies on my off days.

Good advice on the "do it now" note, even if my reaction to "people will think you're an art gallery owner" is "you say that like it's a bad thing."

I suppose it's ok in LTC or similar settings, but I am trying to create an image of professionalism that would work in the community. In the old days, we were respected, I wore white and a cap. Didn't mind, but the PJ/scrubs just don't cut it for me. I need to impress onto patients and their families, that I am a health care professional whose advice/education/counseling should be taken seriously.
I just googled and posted the most atrocious (to me) scrub top.

nods madly re gallery owner comment- not a bad thing to me. I've taken the bloggers words and twisted them to suit me. Blogger seems a little pretentious - talks of High Wasp Clothes. Blog name "Privilege" .....

That's a good point, and one I'll keep in mind when I ever manage to transition to home care.

Tight pants and high heels have their place, but for me it's very limited (though if jeans aren't somewhat tight they won't stay on my hips, so I'm stuck there). I was so happy when my profession (er, before I became a stay-at-home parent) went business casual and I could skip the hose and heels except for court appearances. I am in my early 40's and don't imagine I will somehow get all glammed up in the next decade, though makeup and all that are fun to play around with on special occasions.

To me the tight pants and high heels are a metaphor for dressing smart - be it in skinny jeans, or putting on lipstick every day. I've been neglectful of my outward appearance for many years.

LOL I am in the category of wearing nice clothes every day and thinking it's an absolute pain (both figuratively and literally).

But yes - I agree that it is sometimes nice to wear clothes you know show you to best advantage. Sometimes it's easier to force yourself to be a little different if you take someone else with you when you go shopping. My mother makes me try things on that I would never pick for myself...and occasionally I agree with her.

If someone told me I had to, I'd think it a pain, but as I do it for fun, I'm quite enjoying myself. :)

I've been surprised at the number of academic women who blog about clothes. My aim with the wardrobe makeover - non-work clothes is to have fun with it too. Sorting the work clothes has made getting ready each am far easier.

Weirdly, when I read fashion bloggers, I read the non-academic ones. (I think I just need a break from academics.) I love amidprivilege and Capitol Hill Style.

I have to dress up for work. Yesterday I wore a pencil skirt, white blouse, gray vest, tights, boots, with a necklace, bracelets, earrings, and a flower pin. It can be nice it would be nice some mornings to not have that pressure. I actually should probably wear a suit but most days I get sneak by in trousers and a cardigan dressed up with accessories (it helps that I'm not looking to be promoted too.) Both my mom and sister wear scrubs and I sometimes wish I could be that comfortable. You always want what you don't have. :D

Scrub pants don't fit my body- short waist, high rise. So they never sit comfortably. Look into the capsule wardrobe concept- I use a variation for my work clothes- they are also in their own section of the closet to make getting dressed a no-brainer in the am.
