My jaw is real swollen and I need to go to a dentist. I fall into the high risk group for wisdom teeth, so I'll probably have to get them taken out. Now, I am a poor graduate student without dental insurance, so I'd like to do this as cheaply as possible (though not as cheap as my friend who did LASIK surgery in the back of a semi). I would like ( Read more... )

Do you have the grad student insurance? You can pay $25 to get some discount card through them (http://www.chickering.com/stu_conn/student_connection.aspx?group_number=697442) tto go see a "real" dentist (and also get vision discounts).

BUT wisdom teeth extraction is expensive through a normal dentist, and even with those savings it'll probably be a lot. I had mine out last year (back when I was still on my parents' insurance...those were the days...) and I think it was something like $400 per tooth, plus the nitrous oxide fee.

i had my wisdom teeth removed by an oral surgeon just over a year ago. i had one compacted and one in the bone so a normal dentist couldnt do it. With my insurance ( which only covered about 20% of the cost) i payed about 1200$ out of pocket so i think with insurance it was bout 2000$ more or less. I DID get knocked out completely on the advice of my dentist. so it is a bit cheaper without that...mind you about 300$ less ( ... )

Hey there--one thing I"m pretty sure of is that you can't get your wisdom teeth out while you have an infection, so you will probably have to wait a little. Ugh. I'm sorry.

with mine they used stitches that dissolved after a week or so so there was no visit to have them removed. i think that is the more common practice:)

Maybe you should try St. Elizabeth's of Hungary? It's a clinic near Speedway and Stone (part of Catholic Community Services), and they cater to people who don't have insurance or are underinsured. The cost of services works on a sliding fee scale, and I know they have dentists...but I don't know if they do extractions or how much that would cost. You could try calling them: 628-7271.

Good luck!
