Oaxacan wood carvings

Does anyone have any places they'd recommend for a dude like me who's thinking about buying someone a Oaxacan wood carving for Christmas? I'm referring to those brightly colored, very abstract/stylized animal carvings. I've seen them here and there when I wasn't looking for them, but now that I'm actually looking for them, I can't remember where ( Read more... )

Tolteca Tlacuilo, a shop in Old Town Artisans, downtown across from the art museum. They usually have the best assortment. Picante on Broadway also has a few small ones, but not the more dramatic ones.

Ah, I forgot about them. Thank you! A couple of places on 4th Avenue have them (as I found out this afternoon), but not a big selection of them.

I don't know of any place offhand but the official word for them are alebrijes, so maybe if you search that word the internet will shed some light on where to go.

There are a couple of shops I'm the lost barrio (on Park, south of Broadway) that might have what you're looking for.

Thanks! I ended up finding a decent selection at Tohono Chul Park, but I should head to the Lost Barrio just to see what else I might find.
