De-sexing Cats

Feb 04, 2010 13:08

So last October we kinda ended up taking in two abandoned adorable black kittens, brother and sister. They're now five months old and need to be de-sexed.

I've been checking websites, the posts here, and making phone calls, and the best price I can find is $29 for males, $55 for females, plus $30 each for shots. (Humane Society is respectively $ ( Read more... )

Wow, those are some good prices you found. Good luck, I admire you for taking in some kitties that need homes and for being super responsible about it. Back in the day I used to do some $5 vaccine clinics at Petsmart, not sure if they do those anymore but maybe you can call? I volunteered in Utah so I'm not sure if there are different state laws about that sort of thing. The other thing is that in some states feed stores will carry vaccines pretty cheap so if you can find someone who can administer the shots (or if you can) that's a good way to go too. The only thing that I think a vet HAS to do is rabies. Check state laws I guess :)

Wow! Thank you for the information! Will check about the vaccines at the feed stores, that's a route I hadn't thought of before. Thank you!

However, don't think we'll be going with Petsmart. I called the local one. $210+ for both kittens, plus vaccinations.
... And the rather heavy-handed insinuation that if we did not take our kittens to their store, that we were not doing right by them. No, thank you. *grumpy*

Doh. I forgot they opened those damned Banfield clinics. I used to volunteer with a non profit org and just used space in a petsmart. I don't like Banfield, they're bad imo. I have always thought they were a business before there were vets.

Keep in mind those feed store vaccines are not the current strain of disease so you're putting your pets at risk for current strains when you use those.

I would be surprised if you could find cheaper prices than that for spay/neuter. I'm assuming you're talking about Animal Birth Control clinics. ABC also does some vaccines, which should run around $10 unless they've increased their prices in the past few years.

If you haven't already, I recommend checking the pets forum on Craig's List (tucson.craigslist.org/pet) as there might be information on upcoming spay/neuter clinics there.

The Humane Society is doing it for free on certain days this month! Check it out on the top of their page! http://www.hssaz.org/site/PageServer?pagename=hssaz_homepage

Whoo-hoo! Thank you kindly! They've only got 30 openings each day, so we're gonna aim for being there REALLY early!

Try ABC. They're an 'assembly line' kind of place for surgeries but if it's all you can afford, it's better than nothing.
