Know any good OB-GYNs?

Aug 17, 2009 16:56

I'm new to the community but not terribly new to Tucson. However, after some not-so-great experiences with OB-GYNs that both friends and my primary care provider have recommended, I'm looking for additional suggestions ( Read more... )

I can tell you who to avoid -- I went to Dr. Karen Addis for twenty years, most of which were marked with heavy, uncomfortable periods. At one point I started hemmorhaging and the response was not to get in there and see what was going on and maybe check for fibroids...her first recommendation, since I do not wish to have children, was hysterectomy. Second choice was a d&c followed by ablation, but she didn't feel it was urgent ( ... )

Duly noted -- and it's something I can sympathize with. When I was first diagnosed with adenomyosis -- before I lived in Tucson -- the doctor with whom I consulted (who was in the same practice as the NP I saw regularly) basically said, "Well the only true cure for this is radical hysterectomy. When would you like to schedule it?" Which, yes, is true as far as it goes, but kind of ignores: 1) there may be reasons I want to keep my uterus; 2) hysterectomy is major surgery with its own potential complications, making it maybe not the best choice for a first treatment. This same doctor, though, would not perform an endometrial ablation plus tubal ligation because I "might change my mind."

That is some bullshit. Best of luck to you.

I love Dr Hutchison. Her practice is Sunflower Women's Health Care http://www.sunflowerwhc.com. I don't know about her track record with pain management etc but she is worth checking out at least. I also like Dr Paige (she does not do OB anymore though, just GYN:

Good luck!

Thanks for the info. I'll call to double-check, but my insurance's web site lists Dr. Hutchison as not currently accepting new patients. (Though insurance websites aren't always on top of updating this info.)

I'm also really interested in this practice -- found through Dr. Hutchison's website -- since it specifically lists heavy/painful period management, endometriosis evaluation and management, and pelvic pain management.

I like Desert Bloom OB/GYN. (http://www.desertbloomobgyn.com/our_practice.php)

I have been with Mr Dr Mainman, and the friend who referred me has been with Mrs Dr Mainman. Neither of us has had any complaints. ^_^

I second the rec for Mr Dr Mainman. They cover for Dr Hutchison so I saw him while Dr H was on vaca. Honestly tho I don't like Mrs Dr M as much... just a bedside manner thing.

Can you elaborate on this a little? I'm really liking what I'm seeing of the practice (granted, it's only the website), and they do accept my insurance, so -- I'm strongly considering making an appointment there.

Some "bedside manner" things are ones that don't even register for me, but others can be kind of significant (or even deal breakers). If it's something I think might not work out so well for me, I might consider specifically requesting one or the other. Thanks!

I was recently on hospital bed rest during pregnancy, and for part of the time frame in the hospital my doc (Dr H) was on vacation. So I saw both Drs Mainman while I was in the hospital. Mr Dr Mainman was attentive and friendly and always took plenty of time to answer all of my questions thoroughly and reassure me (which was a big deal to me because it was a scary, stressful situation). Mrs Dr always seemed hurried and somewhat apathetic, and would leave before I realized she was finished so I didn't have a chance to ask questions. I saw more of Mr Dr; I only saw Mrs Dr two or three times, so maybe I just caught her on off days, I don't know. Mr Dr ended up delivering though which I was very grateful for.

Good luck with finding someone who works for you! I am super picky about doctors so I know how frustrating the search can be.

I'm currently under Dr. Mudge at Marana OB/GYN they are on Orange Grove Rd. So more NW side of town.
But I LOVE her, the only down side is the wait times. Sometimes they run really late which obviously is seriously frustrating!
But the car is great, the nurses are wonderful and Dr. Mudge is wonderful.

Steer clear of Dr. Langert. He knows his stuff but he's pretty useless as far as bed side manner goes...

Thanks for the recommendation as well as the "who to avoid" heads up. For this, driving to the northwest end of town is not a big deal. As long as I'm: 1) getting the care I need, and 2) staying in the general Tucson area for a doc, I'm good to go.

PS -- Can I ask whether you've seen Dr. Mudge for gynecological "problems" rather than just routine well-woman care? Part of the issue I've had in the past is that providers who've come very highly recommended by people -- who saw the docs for things like annual exams, contraceptive options, prenatal visits, etc. -- haven't done so well in helping diagnose or manage a chronic condition.

Well currently I'm seeing her as an OB :) She's been wonderful though, I had some breast issues in the beginning of this pregnancy and straight away he got me in for extra testing because of my family history. Recently I've been having sciatic pain which is awful with a toddler in tow, so she put in for a referral to a physical therapist. She's never fobbed me off about anything. She's always taken every concern or complaint I have seriously!
I've heard really good things about Dr. Constatino too.

Good Luck, my Mum has been plagued with woman's troubles for a long long time, so I know how hard it can be to find the care you need.

I saw her after an abnormal pap, for a colposcopy and LEEP procedure. She is one of the few doctors that's ever treated me like a human being. She made me feel very comfortable and spent quite a bit of time answering my questions.
