Once you took the Sidelights start apart, you just FLEW on this. WOO! Seriously, it's been so long since I gave you the wine fabric, I totally forgot about that! I really do like what you've done with it.

It seems like taking it apart freed my mind to come up with an all new plan. I guess there is a reason I don't use layout patterns very often for quilts. I love to figure it out on my own I guess.
It was so nice to just get it all done in one day. Probably won't do that too often, but it was a great feeling for sure! Makes me excited to do more.
I really need to catch up on videos... I'm curious how much you adjusted this quilt from last week :D It looks pretty great, anyway. Great that you made something good out of something you weren't feeling.

Isn't needle down the best thing ever? That was my favourite discovery (besides having space to stuff a quilt) when I first got my Juki after sewing on an old low end Kenmore for years.
At the end of this video I show the original wine quilt top (the before photo) and the after photo. I added pictures because I didn't realize while filming how hard it was to see the fabrics from that distance where I had my tripod.
I know you weren't thrilled about the candy fabric either, lol. I just wanted to get it done and out of my house, but after quilting it with contrasting thread, I actually kind of like it now.
That needle down is DA BOMB. It has seriously changed. my. life. I have a shorter throat on this machine, but I will trade that for the ease of quilting any day.
Ha.. I quit watching after you said bye - I always have two tabs open when I watch videos, one for watching and one for typing my comments, so the picture probably went by while I just assumed the video was over :D
I rarely like novelty prints really and those candy prints are bright in a way my brain doesn't want to compute, but if you can't do bright and crazy for kids, who can you do bright and crazy for?
Just went back and watched that last couple minutes... the purple really does bring the whole thing to life. I like the layout a lot better now too, though I'm not sure I could say why. I like the idea of the border on the top/side, but somehow it just makes more sense the way you changed it.
Yeah the old lay out just made no sense without an actual PANEL. This was just a large scale print and sideways it made no sense. I took the close ups so y'all could see the purple checks next to the green grapevine with pops of purple grapes in it. I feel like the purple really makes it less of an all green and tan quilt.
Exactly how I feel on the brights. I think having more white on the back and the solid binding helped a bit. But yeah, there's a crazy amount of color in that quilt. It's like visiting Willy Wonka or something. But it's for a kid. I'd much rather do brights than pastels for sure.
Thanks! I really wasn't feeling that old quilt top, hence years of languishing in my UFO bag. Now I am motivated to get it quilted and finished!
I have found so far with my limited use of this machine that the start stop button is only helpful if you are sewing a long seam (or FMQ). For patchwork/piecing, so far it has seemed easier to use the foot pedal. For this purpose it worked great and made it easier.
Well, when I say regulated I just mean the machine chooses the stitch length based on the foot you attach and the stitch you select, and you decide the maximum speed you want to sew. It's not really a stitch regulator like some machines have, but it takes the guessing and experimenting out of the process. And you can still adjust the length and width by changing the numbers manually, I just haven't bothered.
I think my first attempt was a bit of a fluke because I did have some issues with the one I worked on yesterday, but it was really operator error more than anything. I need more practice for sure!
I just love that candy quilt, so cool. And the quilting on it is awesome, especially with the "visible" thread. Love what you did with the wine quilt. So glad you like your new machine.
I got lucky with the candy quilt. Did a slightly bigger one yesterday and had a hard time getting my FMQ speed right. I really need to practice practice practice!

And I am totally in love with the candy quilt. I love bright colors and that definitely is bright. I love the experimental quilting on it too.
I'm glad you got your new machine too! I love my Janome but it does not have regulated stitches and I'm thinking I would like that a lot.
