Buffy sighed as she watched the last ships pull away. Well- last ships but one.

“Let’s get a move on,” Buffy said firmly. “We have a planet to nuke, then five minutes to break atmo or we become part of the fireball.”

The vampires had finally gotten the upper hand- the Scoobies’ apocalypse-stopping luck had run out. In the end, all they could do was supervise the exodus. They couldn’t save the world, but they could still save the people.

As the points of light that were the last wave of ships faded, Buffy looked over at what was left of her family. The absence of Xander and Giles still burned, after all these years.

“So, this is it,” Faith said quietly.

“It’s not the same without Giles,” Dawn sniffled.

“Yeah, he’d have loved to say ‘the Earth is doomed’,” Buffy agreed.

“Xander, too,” Willow added. “He’d probably quote Douglas Adams.”

At Buffy’s blank look, she explained.

“You know, ‘so long, and thanks for all the fish’?”

“What do you suppose they’re going to write in the history books?” Dawn asked idly, as she keyed in the first firing code.

“They’re already calling it Earth That Was,” Willow murmured.

Dawn realized that she had really, truly let go when she tried putting on her jeans for the first time in ages and found them uncomfortable.

Not because they didn’t fit- she was of the Eldar, and she had all that came with that package. That included, apparently, never needing to go on a diet. She’d never yet seen an overweight elf. Her waistline hadn’t changed in years.

But her sensibilities had. What once had been her favorite article of clothing had become restrictive and harsh to the touch. She couldn’t even say how long it had been since she’d last worn them- years were beginning to slip by like she knew days or weeks used to when she was mortal.

She set the jeans down without so much as a sigh. She suspected, on some level, that this should upset her. Unexpectedly, it didn’t. She wasn’t sure when or how it had happened, but she had accepted that she was bound to Arda. She had accepted that the Valar and the Powers had connived to prevent Buffy, Willow, and Xander from returning her to Earth.

And now, she accepted that her past was truly gone, never to return.

Ziva glared at the annoying girl, a look she knew would have her partner protectively covering parts of his anatomy while backing away slowly. Annoyingly, it had no effect whatsoever on this girl.

Dawn Summers was perched happily on Tony’s desk, apparently without a care in the world. Ziva was positive Summers had picked the spot so Ziva couldn’t avoid seeing her. The stupid Watcher knew Ziva didn’t like her. And she lost no opportunity to rub her toes in it!

It did not help that Abby, Tony, and McGee were all convinced that Dawn was wonderful.

“Do you not have any place to be?” she enquired as politely as she could.

Dawn shook her head.

“Nope,” she said cheerfully.

Ziva considered telling her that she knew dozens of ways to kill people using common office supplies. Unfortunately, that would probably break Abby’s ruling that ‘you have to be nice to her, Ziva!’

“I thought you were due to fly back to London this afternoon. You know how bad traffic can be. You would not want to miss your flight.”

Dawn shrugged.

“If I do, I just take the later flight. Besides, I can’t go without saying goodbye to Abbs!”
