Lee realized it was stupid as soon as he’d said it. It couldn’t possibly be her. She’d been in one of the Raptors that hadn’t come back. She never made it to Earth.
The dark-haired Slayer he’d just spoken to turned to face him, looking slightly confused. Now that he looked at her straight on, he could see the difference.
“Who or what is Racetrack, yo?” she asked, her tone puzzled.
“Sorry, you look like someone I knew,” Lee mumbled, unsure how to explain himself, or if he even wanted to.
Fortunately, Dawn appeared out of nowhere.
“Racetrack was pretty badass, Faith, so take it as a compliment,” she said firmly, steering Lee away.
As they rounded the corner, she saw the look on his face and sighed.
“Don’t look like you just did something horrible. It’s not that bad.”
“I thought she was someone who’s been dead for a hundred and fifty thousand years.”
“Lee, I miss them too. I know it’s hard. But believe it or not, people here understand. Give them a chance, please?”
Lee nodded.
“And show Faith her photo later. Racetrack deserves to be remembered. She helped us get here, even if she didn’t.”
