i sponsor a child in east india through compassion international - www.compassion.com. his name is ram. :) actually, i don't know where exactly he lives, so for all i know he could have been adversely affected by all this...i've been working on trying to find out, but i'm not sure how to contact him quickly. ANYWAY, compassion is good, it provides money for food and education, and you get a picture and bio of the kid, plus letter-writing - mine sent me one where he'd done the alphabet in hindi and then in english, it was unbearably cute. ok, i'm getting gushy, but definitely check out compassion.
UNICEF doesn't allow you to sponser a child per-say. But they are working now on displaced and orphaned children, and trying to identify children who were seperated from their families in the tsunami.
That picture is very sad. It breaks my heart to know how many children have been killed or orphaned by this disaster.
That's what I'd like to do as well. I've always wanted to adopt kids rather than have my own, and I've always considered adopting a child from overseas.
I'm part of the childsponsors community. You can visit this community to learn of other orgs through which people sponsor children and their experiences with these programs. I personally sponsor a child through Children International. Good luck and congrats on this first step :)
