Characterization can be an absolute bear in a fandom where the canon is written by so many different people with varying takes on the characters. That's one reason why I tend to stick with art in this fandom.
Also, your find and replace suggestion is awesome!

It iiiisssss. (facepalm) It's not at all unusual for it to be in character for a character to be out of character. Which is why my method is to pick one characterization and stick with it, unless it's just totally unworkable.

How far along are you? (And what's the genre, for that matter. I admit to being a genre-leech. There's several that I won't touch with a ten-foot pole.) I've never written anything novel length, and original works really are a whole different cuppa than fanfiction. I am really not a kind critic; I tend to paint things red on a micro level. You would probably do better with an original fiction writer, to be honest.
