(my sister and i went to new york on sunday and came back tuesday and we had sights to see so there wasn't a lot of sleeping in.)

Well flip! I'm not sure I'd be quite so chill about it, but go you for rolling with the punches.
Suggestion for a future trip to Italy - don't do it with a tour company. Just book an air b'n'b or apartment, fly to Florence or wherever, and do it all yourselves. Italian trains are good and go to so many places, Florence is a good base for a few day trips if you want, and if you book via Booking.com or similar you can usually find places where you can cancel almost up to the last minute.
I'm in Lucca now - it's bellissima!

it was my sister's birthday trip and she wanted to take a guided tour because it's a foreign country and neither of us speaks the language. *shrug* i went to italy almost twenty (!!!) years ago with some friends and we winged it - we booked hotels and i think we got tickets to see david ahead of time, but otherwise we got our train tickets when we showed up at the station - but my sister isn't quite that adventurous.

Ah shame - mostly you can get by without speaking much as long as you understand a bit and know enough to be polite. Plus there are a few little tricks that help when getting round - like knowing to book intercity trains in advance and remembering to validate tickets on the platform before embarking.
Maybe another time!
