one apartment today, which was kind of in the middle of nowhere. one of the bedrooms was significantly smaller and had a closet that was too shallow for hangers, so there were shelves in it, like a built-in bookcase with a door. the kitchen walls were tiled, which is apparently a 1930s thing - the tiles were not ninety years old but were in good ( Read more... )

Who'd have thought the story of a cloth could be so interesting. Though as usual - It was all going so well - then the British turned up. Yay for the British Empire.

i admit i giggled when i got to "and then the british turned up". i'd specifically blame the british east india company, rather than the country as a whole. the evils of capitalism!

The printing press demonstration was really neat. Wow, the article on the fabric- the amount of trial and error that must have gone into making it, even to the point of spinning it on boats for the extra humidity!! I hope they do manage to resurrect it

i see printing shit, i have to share. :D and i can't imagine how much time and effort and how many trials it took before the people who made that muslin managed to get it so fine. i mean, who thought to spin it on boats? y'know?
