i went over to my sister's tonight, originally to watch hamilton but it was longer than we thought so we watched infinity war instead. infinity war is actually not that much shorter. and i still like it, but wow is it an effects-heavy movie. a lot of the mcu movies are, tho. especially compared to the old guard, which... is not ( Read more... )

The first book of the old guard is free in a few places (on amazon as well as the official image comics site here https://imagecomics.com/read/the-old-guard) so I checked it out and feel no desire whatsoever to read more. The art is really not to my taste ( ... )

yeah, the art just doesn't do it for me. maybe if i hadn't seen the movie first and wasn't expecting all the characters to look like their actors.... which is probably the biggest problem for me with movies based on comics i haven't read - if i see the movie first, that's what the characters look like to me. andy in the comics doesn't look anything like charlize theron, and joe is just all wrong.

the losers might be the only comic adaptation where i read the source material after seeing the movie, and i think it might be that jock's art is just stylized enough that none of the characters looked wildly different from their on-screen versions. i didn't mind the changes, and i liked the ending of the movie a lot better. go petunias. :D (not that the ending in the comics is a bad one! but the tone of the comics and the tone of the movie were different, and it's just personal preference which i liked better.)

and yeah, that feeling of "this is going to ruin my love of the movie/show" is an EXCELLENT reason to avoid the source

I think you hit the nail on the head with reading comics first vs seeing the movie. The Losers I didn't mind the changes (they all worked really well art-wise to merge with their live action versions) but the ending. GAH. I cannot with how it ended for Cougar. I know it's really well done (and I have read detailed summaries) but GAH.

yeeeaaah, cougar's comics ending was kinda bleak. which is why the movie ending is better. :D
