Oh, I totally think Iona should have sent an invoice! That sounds like some fancy-ass hair, and whipped up without notice on a short deadline, to boot.
Why do brides plan such over-the-top things like "special wedding hair"? How do you even know it will look good or work when you don't wear that style regularly? Though I have curly hair, so it's less well-behaved under all circumstances than most people's.
For my niece's wedding, she had a hair and makeup person who flaked on her, so her mom did it. And the baker seemed to think the wedding was the next day, so the cake arrived late and half-frozen. \o?
Still, the bride looked beautiful. Because she always does, even in jeans and a t-shirt, and none of that overkill was necessary...
Minion and I had a rather inexpensive wedding, but we did not skimp on the attire. After all, I was the Princess Bride and he was my dread pirate captain... We broke almost every wedding rule in the book, but you can't pull that off in jeans and a T-shirt. I spent $100 on the most beautiful medieval braiding my hair has ever been twisted into cascading all the way to my bum, and I never regretted a penny of it. Not only that, but I've made long-term friendships with my hairstylist and my photographer.
That sounds lovely, and it strikes me as being very different from the type of person I was thinking of. You had a theme-- an unusual theme!--and costumes and a sense of fun about the whole thing. I remember the pictures from the wedding being fabulous. :D
I was thinking more of the "fairy princess overload" syndrome, with thousands of dollars being spent on venue, dresses, and decorations, to the point where the couple has wrought financial pain on themselves or the bride's parents. And if that doesn't produce a Bridezilla, nothing will!
I come from a long tradition of backyard weddings, though, so all of that is pretty foreign to me. I think your affair would be much closer to "my kind of thing" than most. ;)
Our wedding quite literally WAS a backyard affair - our venue was the backyard of 200-year-old country farmhouse willed to the county on the death of a prominent dairy farmer more than 100 years ago. We were married under an oak tree against the backdrop of the Mississippi river, in the company of 60 friends and family members, some dressed like their favorite fairytale characters (we had 3 “Doctor Whos, but thankfully no stormtroopers! ;-), and our “catering” was my Uncle’s prize winning BBQ pulled pork, my Mom’s baked beans, potato salad and pasta salad. That was just what best represent us
( ... )
This is fun. You captured that room full of women about to have their photo taken repeatedly vibe really well. I've only been a bridesmaid a few times but there's always an odd mix of tension and party in the air.
thank you! i think i've been a bridesmaid three times as an adult (i was a wee bridesmaid for one of my cousins, but i was like thirteen so it doesn't totally count), and mostly i remember getting dressed and sitting around waiting for something to happen. and trying not to a. wrinkle, or b. lick off all my lipstick.
