that's the only thing i don't get about artists' colonies - the ones i read up on all seem to be kind of in the middle of nowhere, with rules about no outside visitors and no visiting from studio to studio, with nothing to distract you so you can work, and while it's probably great to get some peace and quiet to get shit done, it seems kind of... solitary. like a vacuum. and who can get stuff done in that? y'know?
Lovely. I enjoyed the setting and the characters, and I understand all too well the pressure a forced "Create! Now!" environment can inflict, even when we choose it. :)
i found a blog post by someone (i think he's a composer) who had residencies at macdowell and yaddo, and he said you could be there for a month and spend the first couple weeks totally unable to get anything done. which would totally be me. and i'm glad you liked it. :D
