I love tiny houses and i think they should be a thing for all people who don't want to live in an apartment block for whatever reason. But this story depresses me, mainly because it seems so small scale. I don't know about Detroit but west coast cities have thousands of rough sleepers. Not all of them want a home, but many do, and building 13 homes over 3 years is a drop in the bucket. Why can't the government get their shit together to provide real affordable housing for everyone? Especially in Detroit where huge swathes of land go unused anyway it seems shameful.

i feel the same way! on the one hand, it gets homeless folks off the streets and into homes - cute homes! - but on the other, it won't scale at all in any place that has a large homeless population but not a lot of free land.

unfortunately, when the government (at least the us gov't - i don't know about other countries) gets involved in affordable housing, you get shoddily-built soulless public housing projects that fall apart because a. they're crap, and b. no one cares enough to keep them up. and the gov't doesn't want to spend any money on them. or you get the kinds of policies where contractors have to build so many "affordable" units for every luxury high-rise, so for fifty absurdly expensive units you get like four that normal people can afford. which isn't much help.

I've probably mentioned "Welcome to Nightvale" before, which I LOVE. I think you would, too. Weirdness and dry humor-- what's not to like?

The first season of "Serial" was as good as everyone said, and for non-narrative podfics, I've enjoyed "By The Book" and "Dear Hank and John." Both of those last two were recommended by my f-list. :)

I mostly get my podcasts from podbean, since I listen to them on an MP3 player instead of an i-device and most other sites and apps are not at all helpful for that.

is night vale still going? i always thought it might creep me out too much, altho it did sound like something i might like. i too would probably be listening on an mp3 player rather than my phone (and i don't have an iphone anyway) so podbean sounds like a good rec.

is by the book, like, a book review podcast?
