i'm hot and humid but i finished a book!

What I just finished reading:
blackout, which could've used some editing. there are a lot of places where connie willis takes four pages to detail every single movement and every single thought of one of the characters, even tho the entire thing could be condensed into like two or three paragraphs. also there are a lot of instances where someone ( Read more... )

So I like Glass Lamp in that it makes me think of speakeasies, which this bar might not be, but it also sounds like a similar environment. So maybe keep to that theme, but change the material? Is glass the dominant material for things like lamps? Do they use lamps? If they don't use lamps, do they use something equally evocative? Like if it were a place where the code was that it was safe to come in if the candle was in the window, I might call it the Broken Candle or something like it.

Of course, the real speakeasy I've been to was called The Vault, and it was underneath a very pretentious wine bar, through a couple kitchens and then a walk-in freezer that turned out to be a bank vault. I like the obviousness of some bar names, but also that in that case it was a clever inside joke. The people who knew about the wine bar upstairs thought they were talking about the enormous stockpile of wine, and the people who knew about the speakeasy underground knew they were talking about the bank vault entrance.

it's not a speakeasy, it's just a bar frequented by smugglers and their colleagues. possibly the occasional spaceship crew. the port has some law enforcement but isn't crawling with cops, so the semi-legal and totally illegal don't feel like they have to hide.

the vault sounds pretty cool.

Oh I read a couple of Connie Willis a while back (when I was still reading proper books) and thought they were pretty good. I wonder if I'd think so now...
Enjoy the wedding!

i kind of wonder the same thing! i loved the domesday book but now i wonder if i'd love it as much if i read it again, if it has the same issues blackout does.

the wedding was fun! long, tho. but it's always nice to see my cousins, and their kids have grown into real people! like, adults! with jobs! and rent! which is weird, because i tend to think of them as, you know, kids.

Phoebe And Her Unicornsounds adorable!

Ummm, space bar names...The Last Outpost / The Hideaway / Wayfarer's Rest / Wayfarer's Beacon / Lorelei's Lantern / Rogue's Galley / The Lost Traveler / The Foghorn

Too tired to think of any more, but I hope some of those might help!

phoebe and her unicorn is totally adorable. if there are small children in your life to buy books for, i highly recommend it. or, you know, adults whose inner small child needs a book about a nine-year-old and her unicorn. :D

the spaceport isn't that kind of port - i mean, there's no water - but i really like the foghorn as a bar name. it's so incongruous. the last outpost just makes me think of the last outpost of all that is (which i always thought was called the last outpost of all there is), from back in the misty early days of spn.

Oh, it makes me think of that story, too. I didn't realize I'd put the whole phrase in there.

I so miss those days, when fandom was busy and we had so many amazing writers! And, you know, just Barb in general. :)
