What I just finished reading:
norse mythology, which was entertaining and vaguely educational, altho thanks to the mcu i kept picturing the greater hemsworth as thor, rather than some giant red-bearded dude.

What I am reading now:
engines of the broken world, by jason vanhee, which i just started and is weird and vaguely creepy so far. i read the ( Read more... )

I think Zendaya's and Lana's outfits are my favorites, but they're all stellar. Also much love for Madonna :D

i think zendaya and rihanna totally won the night, but lana del rey gets extra points for sheer wtf. i mean, the heart and swords breastplate thing? what was that? i admit i kind of expected more from madonna - catholic imagery was so totally her thing! and if anyone could overdo it, she could - but she makes a great catholic widow in mourning.

Ooohhh, I know this one! I've never been Catholic, but I've always been fascinated by the imagery.

The heart and swords breastplate is representative of the Seven Sorrows of Mary -- it's not a super-common image, but it's a variation on the Sacred Heart.

i thought it might be sacred heart related, but i couldn't figure out how the swords were significant. and now i know! neat. the headdress was both wtf and really fantastic, which i guess might be applicable to a lot of catholic art in general. the dress was just gorgeous.

If you're in the mood for a little horror, I have gathered some reading suggestions here: https://eve-n-furter.livejournal.com/98361.html

is dan simmons' the terror what they based the tv show off of? the show is supposed to be nicely creepy. i saw let the right one in - the original, not the remake - but i didn't know it was adapted from a book. is it as disturbing as the movie?

i've had joe hill's 20th century ghosts for several years and have not yet read it. >.< i hope you had better luck with nos4a2.

It is and the book is fantastic, I highly recommend it! I wish I could watch the show without pirating it (I'm not, but I have considered it because the tale is just that good).

Nos4a2 was easy to get through and I'm continuing with both Simmons and Hill. I had great fun reading Horns not long ago. I liked Nos4a2 better, but it was an enjoyable read for sure. (And I like Simmons better than Hill overall, but that's because Simmons clicks with me in some way: pacing, cultural references, way of thinking. Hill is a tiny bit more foreign to me.)

nos4a2 is an amazing book. Truly.

I enjoyed 20th Century Ghosts, and liked Strange Weather even better, but nos4a2 is a masterpiece.

Ugh, unorganized, badly planned meetings are the WORST. My sympathies.

I didn't follow the met thing at all but did see some discussion of it on my dash. There was something about how Linda Carter's husband and kids are Jewish and how she thought having a religious-oriented theme was exclusionary and wrong, especially in the current climate? Not sure whether that's a quote from her or someone pulling a reasoning for her outfit out of thin air though... but she did look amazing, so kudos to her.

it was SO BAD. in contrast, i had an online training yesterday that went much smoother, because the people running it knew what they were doing and understood the technology they were using.

i didn't know lynda carter's hubs and kids were jewish until a couple days ago, but in that case it made more sense for her to rep her husband's people at an explicitly and extravagantly catholic-themed event. it was pretty ballsy of her. i guess when you're wonder woman and you look as good as she does, you can pretty much get away with anything.

Even if my interest in her husband waxes and wanes over the years, I always remain a huge fan of Evelyn McGee-Colbert.

i don't know anything about her! what does she do? also, that is the cutest icon from the cutest book.

Oh, I'm not sure what she does besides...be awesome. *g* But I remember all the way back in the early days of TDS/TCR fandom how much we all always loved Evelyn and how cool and pretty she was and their #relationshipgoals marriage. (And thank you!)

YAYYYYYYYYY! Finally, someone besides me can appreciate the beautiful, haunted mood of this story.

I can't believe you read the last page, though. I _never_ do that. It spoils so many stories!

i'm liking it so far! but i have a question! in the beginning, the minister is a fat gray cat, but when gospel comes back with jenny gone, it's turned into a big brown dog. is that on purpose? because it seemed too obvious to be a mistake.

i've been reading the last page first since i was in sixth grade, and i think it's spoiled things for me maybe twice. usually the last page doesn't tell you anything, and even if i know how the story ends, i don't know how it gets there.

Yes, that IS on purpose. :)
