I've found there are a LOT of actors that no longer disappear into their roles for me. I don't know if it's a matter of their casting (hey, we have TOM HANKS in this movie! Did you know we have TOM HANKS? TOM HANKS won oscars! Watch our movie with TOM HANKS!) or the fact they use the casting as easy characterization (i.e. we don't have to write much into the character if we cast Dennis Hopper as the badguy or Johnny Depp as the crazy character or Kurt Russel as the everyman since everyone already will know who they are the moment they're on the screen). It's lazy writing, directing, and casting and it's annoying.

It does not surprise me about the shoes. I vague suspect they just didn't even think of that. Women are supposed to all wear sexy, impossible shoes, don'cha know...

Ugh, I've seen the ads for Winchester. WHY?!? That house is creepy as hell and the reasons behind it being built weird already, why decide to turn it into boilerplate ghost flick?

>>or the fact they use the casting as easy characterization<<

i'd buy it. it happens with george clooney too, altho i think that's more because he has a very distinct delivery. but he's always george clooney, whatever role it is.

i don't think meryl's platform heels were supposed to be for sexy, i think they were to make her taller. and none of her clothes screamed "sexpot!" i mean, it was the early 70s, we're talking wrap dresses with ugly prints. there have to be other, less disruptive ways to make her look less short, besides putting her in anachronistic platform pumps. the costume people didn't even try to make some of them look historically accurate.

that's what gets me! there have to be a ton of interesting or at least weird stories to tell about the winchester house, and the one that's getting told looks a lot like a bog-standard haunted-house movie. talk about lazy.

seriously! it's six and a half years old, but still! stuff shouldn't be breaking.

wait until the olympics. :D they never show curling on prime time, but you should be able to catch it at some point, somewhere.

I check out clothes, too. Things like that put me out of the moment when they occur in movies.

I'm glad the curling is going well! I kind of like watching it...

i'm always looking at women's shoes, and usually it's because they're wearing impractical wedge heels. shoes will throw me out of the story even when everything else is accurate and fabulous.

sometimes curling's fun, sometimes it's just really cold. hopefully there will be olympic curling to watch in a couple weeks.

Whenever I think of the Winchester House, I think of the "The Bloodstained Labyrinth" storyline of Ghost Hunt (an anime that is now 10 years old?!?! where did the time go)... it totally scared me.

But I also thought that it was the best storyline in the whole show which was otherwise fairly average.

i've never even heard of ghost hunt! what was the storyline about? did it suggest the winchester house was (as the movie seems to have it) the most haunted house in the us?

The show was about a group of psychics trying to solve strange mysteries. The storyline that I was referencing was about a fictional house, but heavily took cues from the Winchester House. I liked that it was thoughtfully executed and decently spooky!
