Aw, love the poem... veery evocative.
As for US 1950s food - try UK's rationing for size and then complain about the American 'hardships' LOL!!!!

good point! i think the us had rationing too, but not for nearly as long as you did. we just had a bunch of industrial food manufacturers wondering how to sell the general non-military public on mre's.

I hadn't realised how different the US was to UK before the war too - UK households were still in the dark ages in so many ways, we were that much poorer overall than (middle) Americans. I remember visiting my cousins in Manchester in the 60s and they had an outside toilet with no light in it, so when you shut the door it was pitch black and scary as hell. It was smelly and full of spiders. I never realised until recently that they shared that loo with other houses in the street too! Yuck. If I'd known that at the time I'd have been even more reluctant to use it.

SMELLY AND FULL OF SPIDERS. O.O (it's not the smelly that would get me, it's the spiders. yeeeek.) i had no idea brits were that different from us after the war! i mean, there might have still been americans who had outdoor toilets in the 60s, but in, like, appalachia or other really poor rural parts of the country. manchester's an actual city.

Taylor Kitsch in tiny swim trunks will always be that film's greatest gift. :D

And hey, question for you - do you or any of your friends have any good recs for books about the Boston Irish mob that DON'T focus on Whitey?

taylor kitsch in a leather jacket ain't bad either. :D

are there books about the boston irish mob that don't focus on whitey? :D i haven't read anything about the irish mob, altho if you want to know about jewish gangsters in the 30s, i can sort of recommend a book.... (tommy gun winter. interesting story, jewish gangsters don't get a lot of press, but the author went into way too much exhaustive detail about way too many things.) i can ask around, tho.

I'm a komodo dragon! And have an appetite for life-as well as the ability to swallow an entire goat.

I bite.
