my sister and i saw wind river last night and while i can't say i really enjoyed it (it's a harsh, sad movie), i thought it was well-done and well-acted and i'm glad i saw it. because it starts with jeremy renner's character finding a dead native american girl in the snow, it made me think of the beginning of louise erdrich's love medicine - "the ( Read more... )

what did you think? i didn't think it was a kleenex movie but it was still sad and kind of anger-inducing.

honey cake in general is a good thing. :D i overbaked mine a little, tho. but i think it can be salvaged.

Yes - it induced a grinding kind of sadness rather than the weeping kind. It was a really good film - it felt quite slow even though it started with the girl running, but it built up in layers and the landscape was beautifully shot. It felt like the weather and the scenery was integral to the story. So well done.

One of the interesting things for me was how I ended up feeling Renner's character's pain indirectly via Martin's - that was very subtle! Really good acting on both their parts.

it did feel slow! but in a good way. and wasn't the use of weather and landscape great? altho i kept thinking "if it just snowed, like a lot, wouldn't the snow and wind have covered up any tracks?" but the vastness of the land and the tiny number of people and buildings just brought home how isolated the place is and how easy it is to go missing and how hard someone can be to find. (and how hard it can be to find whoever made someone go missing in the first place.) it's like the people living on the rez have been abandoned to the land, and they kind of have.

the guy who played martin was great. i really liked that martin's pain and cory's pain were kind of mirrors of each other - slightly different circumstances (martin's daughter's death was solved, and cory's daughter's wasn't) but the same outcome, and one has had time to sit with his pain and the other hasn't. and both actors are just really good.
